Kishin Douji Zenki (鬼神童子ZENKI) is an action game for the Sega Game Gear. It is based upon the 1995 Kishin Douji Zenki anime series.

Story

Long long ago, the great Bodhisattva of Japan, Ozunu Enno (役 小角), controlled the Demon Gods to defeat the Demon Goddess Karuma (カルマ). After Karuma's defeat, he sealed away one of his Demon Gods, Zenki (前鬼), in a pillar until needed again.

Centuries later, his direct descendant, a school girl named Chiaki Enno (役 小明), is able to free Zenki, who threatens to kill her as revenge for her ancestor sealing him away. Chiaki uses her enchanted Bracelet of Protection to transform the fierce demon lord into the form of a bratty demon child.

Gameplay

Map

The game is a platforming game that can be played by either Chiaki, a teenage priestess-in-training, or Zenki, a Demon God in the form of an impudent child.

The player selects the next level and the character to play from the map screen. Each character has different abilities that give him or her access to different items and areas in the levels. Some levels have multiple exits that unlock different levels on the map screen. Chiaki must use her abilities to collect the five cosmic elemental orbs in the levels in order to complete the game; the level shows the orb on the map screen if the level is completed without finding the orb. Levels can be replayed after they have been completed to find missed items or exits. Some levels can only be completed by Zenki. Characters can exit the current level by returning to the entrance.

Characters walk with Left and Right. They can run by holding 1 along with Left or Right. They duck with Down and jump with 2. They enter doorways with Up.

Health is depicted as a spinning bracelet in the corner of the screen. The bracelet spins more slowly as the character takes damage. Characters can take up to three hits before losing a life.

Characters

The player can choose which character to play before starting each level. Boss fights are always fought as the adult Zenki.

小明 (Chiaki)
Chiaki Enno is a high school girl who is a direct descendant of Ozunu Enno, the great Bodhisattva who had the power to harness the Demon Gods and fought against evil. She is a shrine maiden in training to become a priestess. Chiaki can turn Zenki into his true Demon God form using her magical Bracelet of Protection.

Chiaki can shoot a flame a short distance in front of her with 1, which can destroy enemies as well as rocks and other objects containing items. She can find spell scrolls in levels that allow her to cast special attacks with Up+1. The fire and wind spells destroy all enemies on screen, while the lightning spell shoots a long-range projectile. These abilities can destroy some enemies and objects that cannot be destroyed by any other means, which makes them sometimes necessary to obtain certain items.

前鬼 (Zenki)
Zenki is a guardian deity also known as the Demon God of Crimson Thunder Light in the Dark. He plays levels as Chibi Zenki but transforms into Demon God Zenki for boss fights.

Chibi Zenki moves faster than Zenki. He curls into a ball while jumping (similar to Sonic the Hedgehog), which is also his means of attack, which can destroy enemies as well as objects such as rocks. This attack can destroy objects below him, allowing him to enter areas not accessible by Chiaki. He can also roll along the ground a short distance with Down+1 or Down+2.

In Demon God form, Zenki attacks in melee range using his Diamond Horn with 1. He can block enemy attacks by holding Up or Down. He has four special attacks, which are chosen by opening a menu with  START . Special attacks are used by holding 1 to charge the attack; when Zenki starts to flash, he can perform the attack by releasing 1. Bosses are weak to different attacks. In boss fights, Zenki's health is shown as a meter instead of a spinning bracelet.
