The majority of the following cheats require entering katakana and thus only work in the Japanese version of the game (with one exception that only uses Latin characters). The Western and Japanese versions of the game use the same save files, so the player can start a game using a cheat code in the Japanese version, save the game in a village, then open the save file in a Western version (though the names of the characters in the party up to that point will remain in Japanese).

The default input system is hiragana (ひらがな文字), but it can be changed to katakana (カタカナ文字) or Latin (英字・記号) using the yellow menu items on the side. The diacritic dakuten (゛) must be added to some katakana.

Sound test

Enter シシオドシ as the name for the main character. Select the Customize (カスタマイズ) item from the menu in the game. The screen now has a second page, accessed with , that has a sound test. It also enables the option to remove Arthur from the active party and replace him with another character (once a fifth party member is acquired). These effects are automatically enabled for other save files (including new save files) after it is unlocked in one save file.

Start with stat-boosting items

Enter ダブルオー as the name for the main character. This starts the game with several permanent stat-boosting items in Arthur's inventory and stat-boosting and healing items in Melody's inventory.

Start with novelty items

Enter ナナメミギ as the name for the main character. This starts the game with a number of novelty items in Arthur's inventory: 歩くとピヨピョ音がする (squeaky sandals), 男気があがる (loincloth), 本気になる ("power undies"), and 卸金系の防具 極め 還もアップ (tengu mask).

Start with Brave Apples

Enter ダーミズダ as the name for the main character. This starts the game with nine Brave Apples each (which increase the level of a character by one when used) in the inventories of Arthur and Melody.

Start with Quick Chickens

Enter ZXー9R as the name for the main character. This starts the game with five Quick Chickens total (which increase the agility of a character by a random amount when used) in the inventories of Arthur and Melody. This code can be used in the Western versions of the game, with a hyphen substituting for the prolonged sound mark (ー).

Start with all pixies

Enter タgUチY as the name for the main character. This starts the game with all 50 pixies found, but only if the byte in memory address 060217A6 is set to 1 through the use of a cheat device (such as a Game Shark or Action Replay).

Unknown effect

Enter アーサー as the name for the main character. This code was discovered by data-mining the game, but its effect is unknown.
