Soukoban (倉庫番) is a puzzle game developed by Thinking Rabbit. It was ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1990 by Riverhill Soft. This version was only released in Japan.

Gameplay

The player plays a warehouse worker and pushes boxes around to their storage locations. Each puzzle is a single screen with no scrolling and consists of a grid of floor and wall tiles. Some of the floor tiles are marked with a blue dot, which represents a storage location.

The player is confined to the board and may move horizontally or vertically onto empty squares (but never through walls or boxes) with the D-Pad. The player can move a box by walking up to it and pushing it to the square beyond. Boxes cannot be pulled, and they cannot be pushed to squares with walls or other boxes. The number of boxes equals the number of storage locations. The puzzle is solved when all boxes are placed at storage locations.

The game tracks how many moves the player takes to complete the puzzle. The player can change the movement speed of the warehouse worker with  START , pause the game with 1, or give up and restart the puzzle with 2. Puzzles can become unsolvable if a box is pushed to a tile where it cannot be moved.

There are 300 puzzles total. The first ten puzzles are available at the beginning of the game; ten additional puzzles are unlocked after each set of ten are completed. The player is given a password after every ten puzzles to continue the game at a later time.
