Wonderland Wars (ワンダーランド ウォーズ) is an arcade strategy game released by Sega. It is a fantasy action 4v4 MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) title, incorporating various gameplay elements of the company's previous successful Japanese network arcade games during the 2000s/2010s. The series began development at Sega R&D1, before transferring to Sega Interactive R&D3 shortly after the formation of Sega Interactive in the same year of its original release to arcades.[3]

Gameplay

Like Border Break, Wonderland Wars takes a popular Western genre, that being the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), and translates it to Japanese arcades. The game plays with one joystick and a pen to use to manipulate the game’s environment, and perform and execute actions.

At first, players choose four out of more than 20 characters, with multiple variations, for a 4vs4 match. They have health, magic, base attack, speed, and drawing distance stats (related to effectiveness of drawing with the pen). Characters can be levelled and customized with different cards to either apply different “attack skills” or assist cards. During a match pitch, an ultimate “Soul Card” can be activated and can become its deciding factor. Like in Sangokushi Taisen, an actual K.O. or the opponents higher health bar after the time limit also decides the match. To bring down enemy health, players defeat opponent characters as well as the castles stationed on the field.

Release

Wonderland Wars was first unveiled at JAEPO 2014,[4] and placed on its first location test two months later in April.[5] The game received pre-launch showcases at Sega Private Show 2014: Summer in June,[6] Japan Gamer's Live in August,[7] and Sega Private Show 2014: Autumn in September.[8] It was initially scheduled to release in the latter half of 2014,[9] but was postponed to early 2015 and location tested again in January.[10] Less than a week before its release to locations, Wonderland Wars appeared at JAEPO 2015.[11]
