NBA All-Star Challenge is a basketball game released for the Sega Mega Drive.

Gameplay

The game is a one-on-one basketball game played on a half-court with one basket. The roster is composed of NBA superstars from the 1991 and 1992 seasons, including Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Larry Bird, and Patrick Ewing. There are multiple play modes, all of which can be played by one or two players.

All fouls are called, including minor fouls like goaltending, and there is a 24-second shot clock. Committing a foul awards possession of the ball to the other player.

One on One
Players compete to score the most baskets. Baskets from within the three-point line are worth two points, and shots from outside of it are worth three points.

Matches can be timed (2, 5, 8, or 12 minutes) or played to a certain number of points (from 5 to 95 points in multiples of 5). Players can toggle winner's outs (possession of the ball goes to the other player after making a basket). When playing against the computer, the player chooses from three difficulty levels and picks the opponent.

The D-Pad moves the player around the court. While on defense, the player can jump to block a shot with A. The player can try to grab the ball from the opposing player with B. On offense, the player performs a jump shot by pressing A to jump and pressing A again while in the air. Landing without shooting the ball results in a traveling call. While moving, the player dunks the ball by pressing C to jump and pressing C again while in the air.

NBA All-Star Challenge, Free Throws.png

Free Throws
Players attempt multiple baskets from the free throw line (5, 10, 20, or 30 attempts). In a one-player game, the player has no competitor and simply tries to make as many baskets as possible. In two-player games, the players take turns to see who can make the most baskets.

A cursor encircles the basket, which determines where the ball is thrown. The player shoots the ball with A. The success of the shot depends on properly timing the button press to the position of the cursor.

NBA All-Star Challenge, 3 Point Shootout.png

3 Point Shootout
Players try to make as many shots from the three-point line as possible. In a one-player game, the player has no competitor and simply tries to make as many baskets as possible. In two-player games, the players take turns to see who can make the most baskets.

The player attempts five different shots from five different positions around the three-point line. The first four balls in each positions are worth one point each; the last ball is colored red, white, and blue and worth two points. The player jumps with A and shoots with A again while in the air.

In the Warmup mode, there is no time limit. In the Contest mode, there is a one-minute time limit for completing all five sets. In single-player games, the player chooses an opponent in Contest mode but has no competitor in Warmup mode.

NBA All-Star Challenge, HORSE.png

HORSE
One player takes a shot from anywhere on the court. If the shot goes in, the other player must make a shot from the same position (which is marked on the court with a big X). If the first player fails to make the initial shot, the other player gets to attempt any shot, which the first player must then try to duplicate. If the second player fails to replicate the first player's shot, the player is given a letter in the word "HORSE." The game goes on until one player gets all the letters in "HORSE" and loses.

The D-Pad moves the player around the court. The player performs a jump shot by pressing A to jump and pressing A again while in the air. When trying to duplicate the other player's shot, the player can only jump while standing on the X that indicates the position of the initial shot.

One on One Tournament
This mode plays the same as the regular One on One game, with the same rules, options, and controls, but players select four different players and compete in multiple matches in a 7-game tournament. In single-player games, the player selects the opposing players as well and can choose which players to play in the second and third stages of the tournament.

Roster

Every team in the NBA at the time has one star player in the game. Players are chosen by team rather than by name.
