Career
Born in Coimbra, Portugal to a family of music enthusiasts, Lopes and his family emigrated to the United States when he was fifteen. After graduating high school, he began a career as a self-taught rapper and producer, releasing numerous Portuguese hip-hop songs, winning several remix contests, and being featured in magazines and hip-hop mixtapes. However, when he got a chance to create music for a video game, he immediately fell in love with the industry and made it his goal to become a full-time game composer.[1]
In 2008, Lopes posted the first of many Sonic The Hedgehog-series arrangements on his YouTube page, gathering some acclaim amongst the Sonic scene. He was soon noticed by Jared Kasl and Tom Fry (co-founders of PagodaWest Games) who proceeded to hire Lopes as composer of the iOS game Major Magnet - his first full soundtrack. In 2015, PagodaWest Games and Headcannon collaborated on the development of the critically-acclaimed Sonic Mania, with Lopes serving as the game's sole composer.[1]
Lopes also composes music for other indie developers, creates jingles and instrumentals for advertisements, and sings cover music at bars and restaurants. He currently lives and works in New Jersey, United States.[1]
