Zaxxon Tabletop Coleco.jpg

This short article is in need of work. You can help Sega Retro by adding to it.

The tabletop version of Zaxxon, for lack of better words to describe it, is an electronic game manufactured by Coleco under license by Sega. It is based on the 1982 arcade game, Zaxxon and was released in 1983. It relies on a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) to project an image, meaning it is a vastly reduced interpretation of the original video game.

This version of Zaxxon does not appear to have seen widespread release outside of North America, though FL Zaxxon, a similar VFD Zaxxon game, saw a release in Japan. Coleco released several tabletop games of this nature during the early 1980s, though Zaxxon is the only Sega game in the series.

Coleco's Zaxxon relies on two VFD screens and a mirror to create its image, and is closer in aesthetics to the Zaxxon arcade machine than FL Zaxxon.
