Battletoads is a beat 'em up game developed by Rare. It was originally developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System and released in 1991, but was subsequently ported to more systems.

Virgin Games acquired the license for the Sega Master System conversion of Battletoads when Sega got the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Game Gear licenses and skipped the Master System one, due to the success of the Battletoads franchise in the North American market and the demise of the Sega 8-bit platform in that region. The deal also secured first option rights to Virgin regarding the release in Europe of any future Tradewest titles on Sega platforms. The initial plans were to release the game on Easter 1993[1], but it was delayed to Christmas 1993[2] and then cancelled entirely.

The next year, Virgin resurfaced their plans for the Battletoads franchise with Master System and Game Gear conversions of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs which were set to release in July 1994 and then cancelled again, until Tectoy rescued the Master System version in 1996. Whenever these ports are related or not to the shelved Master system conversion of the original Battletoads game is unknown.
