Unlike its home console counterparts, the Game Gear version of ''Captain America and the Avengers'' is a more simplistic affair, being a one-player only game that is strictly two dimensional in design. Stages have a similar design to original game (being split up into sub-levels), but are populated by less varied enemies and fewer set pieces. As an example, [[wikipedia:Whirlwind|Whirlwind]] who emerges from a wall from the first stage in the arcade game, triggering a verbal response from the player characters, only appears as a boss fight in stage 1-5 and is not seen before this point.

The Sega Game Gear version of Captain America and the Avengers is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up loosely based on an arcade game of the same name by Data East.

Story

The Red Skull has assembled an army of supervillains and other henchmen in a plot to take over the world.

Gameplay

The game is a beat-'em-up. Unlike its home console counterparts, this version of the game is only single-player and strictly side-scrolling instead of belt-scrolling. Stages have a similar design to original game (being split up into sub-levels) but are populated by less varied enemies and fewer set pieces. As an example, Whirlwind who emerges from a wall from the first stage in the arcade game, triggering a verbal response from the player characters, only appears as a boss fight at the end of the first stage and is not seen before this point.

Players can choose to play as one of four members of the Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Vision. Characters walk with Left and Right. Each character can fight hand-to-hand with 1 or use a ranged special attack with Up+1 or Down+1. Captain America throws his shield, Hawkeye shoots arrows, and Iron Man and Vision shoot energy beams. Characters can also pick up enemies with 1 when close to them and throw them with 1 again. Stages sometimes contain rocks and barrels that can be picked up in the same manner. Characters jump with 2 and can use their ranged special attacks by pressing 1 while in the air. Characters can also perform a diving kick by pressing 2 twice rapidly.

Some stages feature autoscrolling sections that play like a shoot-'em-up. During these sections, the character can move in any direction with the D-pad and shoot with 1.

Characters have a life scale that starts at 100 and goes down as they take damage from opponents. The scale can be restored by collecting special items (and can also go higher than 100). When characters runs out of life, they are defeated, and the player must use a credit to continue. After being defeated, the player can choose a different hero to play. The game ends if the player runs out of credits.
