The goal of the levels is to collect items and reach the "Map" sign at the end. After both of the levels have been completed for a location, Bart can fight the boss by selecting the "Exit" sign from the map screen, who is always a distant relative of Mr. Burns bearing a striking resemblance to him. Other Simpsons cast members sometimes make cameo appearances in the levels. The minigames are optional but award Krusty Collectibles when completed (which are worth an extra life after fifteen have been collected). The player can exit any minigame by pressing . There is no penalty for losing a minigame, and they can be attempted again if lost.
Bart walks with and and ducks with . He jumps by pressing and "super jumps" farther by pressing + while moving. He can run by holding while moving. He can attack by throwing firecracker balls at enemies by pressing (though these are limited, so he must first find a bag of firecrackers first). He can climb things (such as the masts in the Junk level or the Sphinx in the Egypt levels) with and .
Bart has four health points, depicted as balls in the top-left corner, and he loses a health point when he is damaged by an enemy. The number of health points is carried over between levels. Bart loses a life when he loses his last health point and must restart the level from the beginning. The game ends if the player runs out of lives.
