Early in development, the game was planned to have 2 playable characters which could be picked from on a select screen: A shinobi with a dog, as in the final game, and a kunoichi with a hawk. This was removed as it would require more capacity than was available on the ROM given other planned inclusions,[1] with Shadow Dancer being the most demanding game main programmer Takubon had ever worked on.[2]
