Shin Sakura Taisen (新サクラ大戦), known as Sakura Wars in the West, is a soft reboot of the Sakura Taisen series. It was first announced in April 2018 under the title New Sakura Wars, and during development the Western version was known as Project Sakura Wars.

It is the first game in the series released in 15 years since Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love and the second game in the series to receive an overseas translation and release, the first one to be localized by Sega in the west and the first one to be localized to western languages other than English (namely, German, French and Spanish).

Story

Taking place in an fantasy-steampunk inspired alternate timeline, where magic, demons, airships and mechas are common place, Sakura Wars tells the story of "Imperial Combat Revue", a Japanese semi-governmental agency dealing with the emergence of extra-dimensional creatures that invade Earth while simultaneously disguising themselves as a theatre group.

The year is 1940.

Ten years have passed since the infamous "Operation: Twin Capitals" which successfully prevented the rebirth of the Archdemon but also resulted in the total destruction of New York, Paris and Tokyo Combat Revues. Only survivor of the operation, Sumire Kanzaki now leads the new Imperial Combat Revue, as the owner of the Tokyo's Grand Imperial Theatre.

Imperial Combat Revue, however, is no longer what it was. Now severely defunded by government and barely remaining afloat due to lack of talents in the theatre, there are rumors going on that unit itself might be disbanded in the future, with Shangai Revue protecting Tokyo now.

Enter Seijuro Kamiyama, former lieutenant of Imperial Japanese Navy who recently promoted as the Captain of the recently rebuilt Imperial Combat Revue. Kamiyama must not only lead the eccenteric members of the Imperial Combat Revue into combat but also use his skills to solve problems arising around the capital and bring the Revue into its former glory.

Gameplay

The game is a adventure game with dating simulation and visual novel elements with some Dynasty Warriors-esque combat scenes.

Game is about 80% of walking around and talking people, 10% dating simulation elements and about 10% of combat.

Increasing trust with squad members and other people (Read: telling them what they want to hear) is important for getting different endings.

Collectibles exist as "bromides", in other words, pictures of the characters from the game and previous games in the series.

Characters (Playable)

Notavailable.svg

Seijuro Kamiyama
Main character of the game, Kamiyama is a 20 years old former lieutenant of the Imperial Japanese Navy who was transfered to the command of the Imperial Combat Revue after his ship was sunk during a demon attack. Even though his personality is dependent on the player's choices, he is depicted as (similar to the other visual novel protagonists) bit of a knucklehead and pervert.

In combat he controls a Mugen class Striker (the mechas in the game) which dual-wields swords.

Sakura Amamiya
17 year old swordswoman and member of the Revue. Kamamiya's chilhood friend. She idolizes Sakura Shinguji after the latter saved her life during a demon attack. Hopes to becomes a pilot and actress just like her idol. Despite being serious about her duties, she can be occasionally childish and immature especially when it comes to dealing with Kamiyama's antics.

Hatsuho Shinonome
17 year old shrine maiden. Sakura's closest friend and confidante. Acts like a sister to members of the revue. Short-tempered, brutally honest and a bit crude but has a heart of gold.

Uses a Mugen class striker with a gigantic hammer in combat.

Clarissa "Claris" Snowflake
16 year old noble woman from Luxembourg. Capable of unleashing magic using using old tomes. Because of her sheltered life and the dark past surrounding her family she is not good with people and has a pessimistic personality. (at least at the beginning of story) Loves reading and writing stories more than anything, so much to the point she blocks herself out of everything while doing either.

Uses magic bolts for ranged attacks in combat.

Azami Mochizuki
13 year old ninja from the Mochizuki clan. (At least she believes she is one) She is suprisingly agile and capable of seemingly inhuman physical feats. Despite being serious about her ninja training, she is still a child and often acts like one. Has a sweet tooth.

Anastasia Palma
A famous, 19 year old theatre actress from Greece who performed across the Europe before taking up a position in the Imperial Combat Revue. Despite having a serious attitude when it comes to acting, this mysterious (and curvaceous) beauty has a flirtatious personality and a rather fatalistic outlook towards life.

She uses a Mugen class striker armed with a pistol that fires ice coated bullets.
