Metropolis was the first Sega-branded arcade to open in the United Kingdom, and was located in the basement of Hamleys at 188-196 Regent Street, Soho, London.
History
Metropolis opened in November 1992, to coincide with the global launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The venue contained an assortment of Sega arcade machines, including several rare pieces including the R360[1] and the "Sega Net Merc"[2] system, and was one of the main testing grounds for then-new Sega arcade games released in the UK. Metropolis also housed a snack bar.
The venue also held several Sega-related events, including Sonic's 6th Birthday Celebration on November 16, 1997.
Metropolis closed in March 2000 in order to make way for a complete refurbishment of the basement area. The arcade was reduced in size and reopened as a Sega Park later on in the year, under new owners Leisure Exchange. Sega Park remained trading until around 2005, and was replaced with a branch of Game in November of that year.[3]
