Localisation comparisons
Namco logo
When booting the game "Namcot" is "Namco" overseas, and "Mega Drive" is "Genesis" in North America.
Introduction
All Japanese text was removed from the introduction sequence in the West, and the English font was changed. The translation also differs.
Title screen
The Western releases alter the game's title to Splatterhouse: Part 2, replaces the original ® registration mark with a ™ trademark, and changes NAMCOT to NAMCO.
Story
The story is more fleshed out in the Japanese version, both in the cutscenes and the manual. The Western release altered several plot points and introduced elements not present in the original story, creating continuity errors with the franchise's overall plot.
Main menu
The Japanese version features limited continues (but with a hidden stage select cheat), while the Western versions replace the hidden stage select with a password system.
Mask
Like the previous entry in the series, the appearance of Rick's mask (originally an allusion to Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th film franchise) was altered in the West to avoid any legal conflicts with Paramount Pictures. In particular, while the Japanese version originally featured a mask which takes loose inspiration from kabuki theatre, the Western releases feature a more skull-like design.
Cutscenes
While all versions of the game's cutscenes contain English subtitles, the Japanese version contains both a different English script (featuring notably worse grammar) and additional on-screen Japanese text for gamers not fluent in English.
