MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat (メックウォリア2) is a first person shooter developed by Quantum Factory and published by Activision for a variety of platforms including the Sega Saturn.

It is part of the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe, a series that has seen most of its success on DOS and Windows computers. The only other game in the series to be released on a Sega platform is BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat for the Sega Mega Drive.

Gameplay

The game has the player pilot a walking mech, destroying targets on a 3D playfield.

Despite its name, the Saturn (and PlayStation) versions of MechWarrior 2 are in fact stripped-down versions of the PC version of the game (of which there are several flavours, beginning with a 1995 DOS release). The controls have been simplified, the maps are smaller, and the gameplay has a more "arcade-like" quality to it. Visuals are similar to the PC 3D accelerated versions of the game, however the game runs at a lower resolution and has different (and often higher quality) textures.

Interestingly the Saturn version also sports more detailed textures and skybox than the PlayStation release, though lacks alpha transparency effects. Maps also vary slightly between the two versions. Music from the 1996 DOS/Windows re-release, MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries is used, rather than the soundtrack bundled with the 1995 version.
