Car Licence (カーライセンス) is a Sega Game Gear traffic code education program developed by System Vision and For You[2], and published by Nayuta.[1] Released exclusively in Japan in 1995, it was produced to assist players in passing their Japanese driving exams, and was generally available for rent through Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation-supported driving schools.[3]
Contents
Gameplay
Car Licence features a total of 600 questions related to traffic code and proper driving techniques. The number of questions, as well as the exam time allotted, can be adjusted by users.[3]

The primary content of Car Licence is the Test Simulation, a recreation of a standard Japanese driving exam. As well as taking a standard exam, users can study the exam at their own leisure, edit the number of questions and topics, and set a time limit similar to that imposed during the actual test.[3]
Sign Test | |
Sign Test allows users to study and quiz themselves on Japan's road traffic signage. Players can browse images of each type of traffic sign, including descriptions of their meaning, with a comprehensive list included for study.
Brocked Street | |
Alongside the study program is an included minigame, Brocket Street. Players control a flashing traffic light at the bottom of the screen, and are able to move left and right across either of the four lanes. Different cars begin driving down these lanes towards the bottom of the screen, and players are tasked with firing projectiles upward at the cars to push them backwards.[4] |
History
Produced specifically for distribution to Japanese driving schools, Car Licence was only available as a pack-in game with two exclusive Game Gear bundles. The first was included with a specially-branded storage pouch and available for rent through Japanese driving schools, including five instructional notebooks to further assist in study[3], while the second was a version packaged in a proper box and seemingly intended for the general consumer market.
According to Famitsu, Car Licence was reportedly popular among young students, and commented that the game may be a perfect solution to the difficulty of Japan's driving exam. [3]
