Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the Sega Mega Drive is a versus fighting game based on the TV series of the same name.

Story

Rita Repulsa

The evil intergalactic sorceress Rita Repulsa is plotting, from her castle on the moon, to take over Earth by letting her gang of monsters loose on the planet. She has also brainwashed the teenager Tommy Oliver into fighting for her side as the Green Ranger.

Five teenagers named Jason Lee Scott, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Trini Kwan, and Billy Cranston have been chosen by the galactic wizard Zordon to fight her. They possess mystical Power Coins that allow them to transform into the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and special vehicles called Dinozords that can combine into the giant robot known as the Megazord.

Gameplay

Character select

The game is a one-on-one competitive fighting game starring characters from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series. The objective is for both fighters to battle each other until one drains the vitality of the other. There are two different game modes: a Scenario Mode where one player competes against a series of CPU-controlled opponents, and a Battle Mode where two players can fight each other.

In the Scenario Mode, matches consist of two parts: the player first fights against a regular-sized monster as one of the Rangers, then after the defeating the monster, they battle a giant version of it in the Megazord. Atypically for a fighting game, the player can select a different character after each match. Initially, only the five original Rangers and the Megazord are available, but once the Green Ranger is defeated, he and the Dragonzord are unlocked. The Power Rangers face the following adversaries (in order of their appearance): Minotaur, Evil Green Ranger (with the Dragonzord), Madame Woe, Goldar, and Cyclopsis (in a two-part, Zord-only battle).

In Battle Mode, two players can choose between the six rangers, the three Zord mechas, and the three monsters in a best two out of three match. The Megazord, the Dragonzord, and Cyclopsis cannot be matched against any of the six rangers and vice versa, and players cannot both choose the same character. Players can choose the stage and optionally change their power levels (between eight different levels) to handicap more skilled players.

Characters move with and , crouch with , and jump with . Stages scroll endlessly in either direction. The game utilizes a simple two-button control scheme, for light attacks and for strong attacks. Characters can dash forward with (or if facing left) or backflip away with (or if facing left). Guarding is performed by holding away from the opponent. Projectile attacks can be deflected by pressing the D-Pad twice in the direction of the opponent and pressing +. There are no throws. Each character has a selection of unique special moves performed with particular button combinations.

As characters suffer damage and lose vitality, their Power Meter increases. The meter drains again if the character goes a period without taking damage. If the meter fills, it starts to flash, which indicates that the power of the character's special attacks are increased. The effect is temporarily, and the meter stops flashing and drains after some time passes.

In the options, the player can set the difficulty of computer opponents (between eight different levels) and change the timer (from 30, 45, 60, or the default 99 seconds) or disable it entirely.

Heroes

The Red, Black, Blue, Pink, and Yellow Rangers (with the Megazord) can be played in the single-player mode, with the Green Ranger (with the Dragonzord) becoming available after defeating him.

	Red Ranger

	The Red Ranger is the leader of the Power Rangers. He is a dedicated martial arts practitioner and instructor. He uses a sword. Move list Name Command Description Heel Kick  ATTACK  Red Ranger flips forward with his heel in front. Power Gun  ATTACK  Red Ranger shoots his Power Gun, firing a projectile across the screen. Power Sword  ATTACK  Red Ranger slashes around himself with his Power Sword.
	Black Ranger
	Real name: Zack Taylor Power Coin: Mastodon
	The Black Ranger is the second-in-command of the Power Rangers. He is a skilled dancer and martial artist and created his own fighting style, called "Hip Hop Kido," that combines both. He uses an axe. Move list Name Command Description Spinning Axe  ATTACK  ATTACK  ATTACK  ATTACK  ATTACK  Black Ranger spins in a circle with his axe extended. He continues spinning as long as the button is pressed repeatedly. Power Gun  ATTACK  Black Ranger shoots his Power Gun, firing a projectile across the screen. 	Blue Ranger
	Real name: Billy Cranston Power Coin: Triceratops
	The Blue Ranger is a genius scientist who often creates gadgets or devises plans for the team. He was trained in martial arts by the other Rangers. He uses a lance. Move list Name Command Description Thunder Lance Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Blue Ranger spins his lance, then jumps into the air while holding it out. Power Gun  ATTACK  Blue Ranger shoots his Power Gun, firing a projectile across the screen. 	Pink Ranger
	Real name: Kimberly Ann Hart Power Coin: Pterodactyl
	The Pink Ranger is a talented gymnast who incorporates gymnastics into her fighting style. She uses a bow. Move list Name Command Description Knee Whip Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Pink Ranger dashes forward in the air, then kicks in a circle. Power Gun  ATTACK  Pink Ranger shoots her Power Gun, firing a projectile across the screen. Dino Arrow Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Pink Ranger shoots a flaming arrow at her opponent.
	Yellow Ranger
	Real name: Trini Kwan Power Coin: Saber-Toothed Tiger
	The Yellow Ranger is an intelligent and athletic member of the team. She uses twin daggers. Move list Name Command Description Dagger Tackle  ATTACK  Yellow Ranger spirals toward her opponent in the air like a torpedo while holding her daggers in front of her. Power Gun  ATTACK  Yellow Ranger shoots her Power Gun, firing a projectile across the screen. 	Green Ranger

	The Green Ranger is a skilled martial artist. He has been brainwashed to serve Rita Repulsa, but he joins the Power Rangers after they defeat him in battle. He uses the Dragon Dagger. 	Megazord
	The Megazord is a giant robot formed by combining all of the team's Dinozords. In the single-player mode, the second part of each match is played in the Megazord for the Red, Black, Blue, Yellow, and Pink Rangers. Shield Flash  ATTACK  Megazord holds an arm out and generates an energy shield that knocks opponents down. Inferno Blast  ATTACK  Megazord throws a fireball across the screen. Lightning Plasma  ATTACK  Megazord shoots a lightning bolt into the air directly above it with its sword, then swipes its sword.
	Dragonzord
	The Dragonzord is the Green Ranger's special Dinozord. In the single-player mode, the second part of each match is played in the Dragonzord for the Green Ranger. Move list Name Command Description Heat Horn Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Dragonzord shoots an energy wave across the screen from its head. Blade Whip Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Dragonzord turns around and whips its tail, which has a pointed end, into the air. Dragon Missile Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Dragonzord throws a volley of missiles in a short arc in front of it. Dragon Dynamo Hold for 2 seconds, then release Dragonzord transforms into a robot samurai and charges forward with a lance.

Villains

The villains appear as adversaries in the single-player mode and can also be selected to play in the two-player mode.

	Minotaur
	Minotaur is a monster mirroring the mythological creature of the same name with the head of a bull and body of a man. He uses a spiked club. Move list Name Command Description Tornado Charge Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Minotaur charges ahead like a bull. Fire Breath  ATTACK  Minotaur breathes fire a medium distance in front of him. Power Wall  ATTACK  Minotaur pounds the ground, creating a pillar of white fire in front of him. Jack Knife Tackle Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Minotaur jumps into the air and splashes down.
	Madam Woe
	Madam Woe is an elemental water fairy monster. Move list Name Command Description Water Blast  ATTACK  Madam Woe fires a ball of water across the screen. She shoots a fireball diagonally downward if this move is performed in midair. Ice Breath  ATTACK  Madam Woe breathes a cloud of frost a short distance in front of her. Hair Whip Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Madam Woe slings her hair like a whip, covering a range about half the width of the screen.
	Goldar
	Goldar is one of Rita's generals. He resembles a gorilla wearing gold armor and fighting with a sword. Move list Name Command Description Hurricane Sword  ATTACK  Goldar swings his sword, creating a tornado that travels across the screen. Eye Beam  ATTACK  Goldar throws a fireball across the screen. Gold Slash  ATTACK  Goldar jumps into the air while extending his sword outward. Atomic Ball Hold for 2 seconds, then release Goldar creates an Atomic Ball that travels across the screen.
	Cyclopsis
	Cyclopsis is Goldar's giant evil War Zord. Move list Name Command Description Arm Thunder  ATTACK  Cyclopsis throws a fireball across the screen. Lava Missile  ATTACK  Cyclopsis shoots a missile at the ground in front of him that creates a pillar of flame. Lightning Rain  ATTACK  Cyclopsis jumps into the air and emits lightning from his body that strikes all around him. Razing Flash Hold for 1 second, then + ATTACK  Cyclopsis dashes forward and slashes the energy blade in his arm.

Stages

In the single-player mode, the rounds played as the Power Rangers are played in the Rangers Stage, while rounds played in a Zord take place in the opponent's stage.

In two-player games, players can choose the stage for the match. However, the Rangers Stage is always used when either player is controlling a Power Ranger. The Rangers Stage cannot be chosen if either player is controlling a Zord (the Megazord, the Dragonzord, or the Cyclopsis).

In North America, two cover variants exist. The rarer of the two, which depicts the Rangers at a construction site, commands high prices second hand.
