Sakura Taisen: Ouka Kenran (サクラ大戦 桜華絢爛) is the first OVA based on the Sakura Taisen franchise.
Ouka Kenran was the first piece of animated material (outside cutscenes in the original Sega Saturn game), and when localised for the US (and later European) markets, became known simply as Sakura Wars.
The OVA consists of four parts originally released on VHS and LaserDisc between December 1997 and July 1998:
- Hana no Miyako no Hana Ikusa (華の都の花いくさ); (1997-12-18)
- Sakura no Hana ni Hanate yo Shinken (桜の花に放てよ神剣); (1998-02-25)
- Haru wa Yayoi no Hatsu Sentou (春は弥生の初戦闘); (1998-05-25)
- Manatsu no Yume no Yoru (真夏の夢の夜); (1998-07-25)
However, newer releases generally favour combining all four parts onto one cassette or disc, or at the very least selling all four parts as a set.
Ouka Kenran would be followed by a sequel in 1999 in the form of Sakura Taisen: Gouka Kenran.
