Gameplay
The game is an autoscrolling shoot-'em-up. The player commands the Orguss, which can swap between robot and starship modes freely, with each mode having advantages and disadvantages. The goal of each round is to make it to the Space/Time Oscillation Bomb at the end and destroy it before time runs out. The Orguss moves in any direction with the joystick. It shoots with and switches between the two forms with . The Orguss can only have one shot out at a time, but the shot can penetrate through multiple targets. It has rapid-fire in robot form but not in starship form.
In robot mode, the Orguss has greater freedom of movement across the screen, allowing it to destroy ground targets. However, it is a bigger target for enemies and moves more slowly. Because of its slower movement, it is not possible to reach the end of the round before the time limit runs out solely in robot mode. In starship mode, the Orguss cannot move below the horizon and therefore cannot attack ground targets, but it moves more quickly and can dodge enemy fire more easily. The Orguss transforms into robot form (and cannot switch back to starship mode) at the end of the round to destroy the Space/Time Oscillation Bomb.
The Orguss is destroyed if it is hit by enemy fire or collides with an enemy, but it respawns in place if there are extra lives remaining. If time runs out, the player loses a life and the round starts over from the beginning. The game ends if the player runs out of lives. There is only one round, with three different segments, which repeats until the player loses or decides to stop playing.
