Bobmark International
From Sega Retro
Bobmark International was a video game distributor in Poland mainly known for the Pegasus console release.
History
In 1990, Marek Jutkiewicz founded the Marcon company[1] and started importing cheap clothing from Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong. During one of his stays there he saw a famiclone and saw the potential in the console. With his friend, Dariusz Wojdyga who ran from 1990, the company called Export - Import D. Wojdyga (renamed in 1994 to Video - Games D. Wojdyga)[2]they started a joint venture called Bobmark International and began ordering from the Taiwanese console and selling it in the country from 1991 advertised as Family Video Game. Wojdyga came up with the name new name called Pegasus and in 1992 company gained a profit of 30 billion zł.
The consoles from the newly founded company began to take Polish market between 1992/1993 and generated in 1993 a profit of 62 billion zł which was the biggest profit during its existence of Bobmark. In 1994, Bobmark saw a change in the law that prevented from selling copies of video games. The company acquired licenses to sell games on Pegasus from Sachen and Codemasters and relased new Pegasus IQ-502 (based on Micro Genius IQ-502 design, rather than Famicom). Sell of cartridges from other producers was over, but at the flea market and in small stores, it was still possible to get this bootleg cartridges and cheaper clones. Bobmark also decided to get along with Sega (which was at the time delivered to Poland by Nissho Iwai) and created AGES in mid-1994, a wing of company that dealt with authorized distribution of Sega video games and Pegasus original software (all history about Sega and Bobmark cooperation can be found in History of Sega in Poland article). In 1995, Bobmark signed cooperation with Warner Interactive Entertainment, Ocean, Konami, Acclaim, Gremlin, Electronic Arts and Disney to sell their games on PC and consoles.[3]This was the last year were company recorded profit.
In early 1996 (likely January-February 1996), Bobmark got full distribution license from Sega, replacing Nissho Iwai in that role and released Sega Saturn in March[4]. Bobmark launched large advertisement in press, gaming events (Gambleriada, Playbox) and TV (Escape TV on Polonia). From 1997 Playstation became more and more popular in the world and Saturn began losing, which resulted in ending of cooperation with Sega on September 1997. From 1996 to 1999 were a time of losses for the company. It was decided to put more capital into Hoop, a wing of Bobmark that been selling refreshing drinks from 1992. From 1999, Bobmark is one of Hoop's subsidiaries and exists until this day selling refreshing drinks in Warsaw region.
