Burning Rival (バーニングライバル) is a versus fighting game developed by Sega AM2 for Sega System 32 arcade hardware. It is built very similarly to Street Fighter II. ROM data seems to suggest the game is built on the code from AM2's earlier System 32 game Arabian Fight[2].

Sega Logistics Service announced it would end service on Burning Rival arcade machines on March 31, 2017.[3][4]

Graphics and art

Nearly all the art was outsourced to animation company Zero‑One. The only graphics created internally at AM2 are the effects, made by Masataka Aochi.

Music and sound

Unlike every other System 32 game, Burning Rival seems to have been designed to play its audio in mono. Rendering the game in stereo reveals that the FM audio uses no stereo effects and all PCM tracks except character voices only exist in the left channel.

The music was composed by Hideaki Miyamoto, who would go on to compose for Hard Dunk and Virtua Striker. The sound effects were created by Tohru Nakabayashi, who had previously worked on Bahamut Senki and Arabian Fight (another System 32 game which this game reuses some sound effects from).

A sound test can be accessed in the test menu.
