Gameplay

Makaimura

Ghosts'n Goblins Saturn, Introduction.png

Introduction

Makaimura (known as Ghosts'n Goblins in the West) is a side-scrolling action platform game, originally released in arcades in 1985. The player controls a knight named Sir Arthur, who must fight hordes of zombies, giants, demons, dragons, and other supernatural creatures in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin, who has been kidnapped by the Great Demon Lord Astaroth. The game is known for its high difficulty, as enemies attack relentlessly, Arthur can only sustain two hits before dying, and every stage must be completed twice, the second time at an increased difficulty level, in order to receive the true ending.

Arthur moves with Left or Right and kneels with Down. He jumps with B. He attacks by throwing a weapon with A or C. Initially, he throws lances, but he acquires different weapons during the journey (which replace his equipped weapon). Multiple weapons can be thrown consecutively (though the exact number depends on the type of weapon equipped). Arthur can attack while standing, kneeling, or jumping. He climbs ladders with Up and descends them with Down.

Arthur starts each stage wearing a suit of plate armor. If he takes damage from an enemy, he loses his armor and wears only his underwear. If he is hit again without his armor, he dies. The first four stages have a checkpoint midway through where Arthur restarts if he has passed it; otherwise, he must restart the stage from the beginning. Every stage also has a time limit, and Arthur dies if the time limit expires. Arthur starts with his armor again after losing a life. The game ends if the player runs out of lives. Extra lives are given at 20,000 and 70,000 points, then every 70,000 points after that.

The game has four difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert), and the player can set the number of starting lives (between 1 and 9). There is an alternating two-player mode.

Items

Items are usually dropped by enemies when they are defeated, but some hidden items only appear when Arthur stands, jumps, or kneels in a certain spot of the stage.

In addition to these items, every stage has a unique accessory belonging to Princess Prin Prin, such as her necklace or crown, that is sometimes dropped by an enemy. These items award bonus points when collected.

Daimakaimura

Ghouls'n Ghosts Saturn, Introduction.png

Introduction

Daimakaimura (known as Ghouls'n Ghosts in the West) is the first sequel to Makaimura, originally released in arcades in 1988. It is a side-scrolling action platform game like its predecessor. Arthur must again battle hordes of undead and demonic creatures to restore the souls of the people of the kingdom, including Princess Prin Prin, which have been stolen by the Great Demon King Lucifer. Arthur gains the ability to shoot directly above him or below him and to obtain Golden Armor that gives him the ability to use special magical attacks.

He can attack directly upwards with Up+A/C; while in midair, he can attack directly downwards with Down+A/C. He climbs ladders with Up and descends them with Down.

Arthur begins the game wearing a suit of Steel Armor and wielding a lance, but he can pick up a variety of weapons and armor throughout the stages to help him in his quest. Finding the Golden Armor allows him to charge up his weapon by holding A or C to release a powerful magical attack. Each weapon has its own special attack.

When Arthur is injured while wearing his armor, his armor falls off, leaving him wearing only his underwear. If he is injured without his armor, he turns into a skeleton and loses a life. Each stage has a checkpoint partway through where Arthur is revived if he has passed it; otherwise, he must restart the stage from the beginning. Every stage also has a time limit, and Arthur dies if the time limit expires. Arthur starts with his armor again after losing a life. The game ends if the player runs out of lives. Extra lives are given at 30,000 and 60,000 points, then every 70,000 points after that.

The game has four difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert), and the player can set the number of starting lives (between 1 and 9). There is an alternating two-player mode.

サイコキャノン (Psycho Cannon)
Shoots fireballs, though they cannot travel the full length of the screen before dissipating. The fireballs neutralize enemy projectiles and explode after hitting an enemy. It is collected from the goddess in the first stage on the second playthrough if Arthur is wearing the Golden Armor. If it is lost, it can be found again as long as Arthur is wearing the Golden Armor. It is needed to fight the final boss.

Goddess

To defeat the game, Arthur must complete stages 1 through 5 twice.

When reaching the entrance to Lucifer's chamber at the end of stage 5 on the first playthrough, the Archangel Michael (ミカエル) appears and informs Arthur that he cannot defeat Lucifer without first receiving the magic power from the Goddess of Battle (たたかいのめがみ) in the village.

Arthur is then taken back to the first stage. If he has the Golden Armor, the next treasure chest contains the goddess, who gives him the Psycho Cannon weapon. To enter Lucifer's chamber, Arthur must have this special weapon equipped. Otherwise, he is sent back to the beginning of stage 5.

Choumakaimura

Super Ghouls'n Ghosts Saturn, Introduction.png

Introduction

Choumakaimura (known as Super Ghouls'n Ghosts in the West) is a side-scrolling action platform game, originally released for the Super NES in 1991. Arthur must descend into the Demon World again and free Princess Prin Prin from the Demon Emperor Samael. The game has an increased emphasis on platforming, as Arthur has gained a double jump (but loses his ability to throw weapons directly above or below him). He now has three levels of armor: the starting Steel Armor, a new suit of Bronze Armor that enhances the equipped weapon, and the returning Golden Armor that gives him a magical ability depending on the equipped weapon. He can also find and equip shields that protect him from frontal attacks. Many stages introduce environmental effects, such as the ground rising or falling from earthquakes or the entire stage rotating around Arthur, to take advantage of the graphical capabilities of the Super NES.

Arthur moves with Left or Right and kneels with Down. He jumps with B and double jumps with B again while in midair. Double jumps allow him to jump higher, and he can also change the trajectory of the second jump by holding Left or Right. Arthur attacks by throwing a weapon with A or C.

Arthur begins the game wearing a suit of Steel Armor and wielding a lance, but he can pick up a variety of weapons and armor throughout the stages to help him in his quest. The Bronze Armor gives Arthur a more powerful version of the weapon he is holding, such as flaming lances. The Golden Armor provides him the enchanted weapon plus a Moon Shield, which protects him from an enemy projectile, and the ability to charge a magical attack by holding A or C. The magical attack varies depending on the equipped weapon.

If Arthur gets hit by an enemy or projectile, he loses his armor and is reduced to his underpants; if he is hit again, he crumbles into a skeleton and loses a life. Each stage has a checkpoint partway through where Arthur is revived if he has passed it; otherwise, he must restart the stage from the beginning. Every stage also has a time limit, and Arthur dies if the time limit expires. Arthur starts with his armor again after losing a life. The game ends if the player runs out of lives, but it can be continued a limited number of times. Extra lives are given at 20,000, 60,000, and 130,000 points, then every 80,000 points after that.

The game has four difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert), and the player can set the number of starting lives (between 1 and 9).

Stages

Super Ghouls'n Ghosts Saturn, Goddess Bracelet.png

Princess Prin Prin

As in the preceding games in the series, the player must complete every stage twice and obtain a special weapon in order to unlock the final boss room. After finishing the seventh stage in the first playthrough, Princess Prin Prin appears and tells Arthur that he can only defeat Demon Emperor Samael if he possesses the Princess Bracelet (プリンセスの腕輪), which she hid somewhere along the way after she was kidnapped.

Arthur is then returned to the first stage, and the Princess Bracelet can now be obtained from treasure chests. After completing the seventh stage on the second playthrough, Arthur can only proceed if he has the Princess Bracelet equipped; otherwise, he must play the stage from the beginning again.
