A carnival game (カーニバルゲーム) is a type of arcade game inspired by travelling carnivals, first seen in the late 1800s. Such machines usually have a physical element of them as a test of skill, with minimal electronic components.
Sega of Japan was produced carnival games, though not typically not sold units commercially to third-parties. Instead, these machines were seen almost exclusively in Sega's Amusement Theme Park venues (e.g. Galbo and Joypolis).
In the West, this style of game often dispenses tickets which can then be used to buy prizes, and are typically known as redemption games. In Japan, the prize element is usually removed; some Joypolis venues used "carnival coins" (similar to medal games. Sega's Japanese carnival games rarely (if ever) left Japan.
