The 8-bit version of Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II (アイルトン・セナ スーパーモナコGP II) or simply Super Monaco GP II is a racing game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear in 1992, as a counterpart to the Sega Mega Drive game of the same name.
This version is a successor to the 8-bit versions of Super Monaco GP, but this time the game is sponsored by Formula One driver Ayrton Senna (who won the Monaco Grand Prix six times). It is also missing the "Senna GP" mode from its Mega Drive counterpart.

Gameplay
The game is a racing game inspired by Formula One. Like its predecessor, it uses a third-person perspective from behind the car rather than the first-person perspective used by its Mega Drive counterpart. The Game Gear version supports two players, but the Master System version is for one player only. There are 16 courses, and players can customize the equipment of their cars before each race. Players can choose between Beginner and Professional levels, with the former showing a map of the course in the top part of the screen during the race. Only the player's car and Ayrton Senna (who is always in the lead position unless overtaken by the player) are marked on the map.
The car steers with and
. When equipped with a manual transmission, the car accelerates automatically and can be upshifted with
and downshifted with
. There are six speeds, and a tachometer shows the engine speed so the player can identify the optimal time to shift. When equipped with an automatic transmission, the car accelerates with
and brakes with
.
Driving off the track or hitting an obstacle (including another racer) slows the car.
Modes
World Champion is the main mode. It is a series of races on all 16 courses in order, with each race consisting of five laps. The player is awarded points for finishing in the first six positions, and the winner of the series is the player with the most points after the final race. Vehicle equipment can be customized before each race. There is a password system for continuing the game.
Placement | Points awarded |
---|---|
1st | 10 |
2nd | 6 |
3rd | 4 |
4th | 3 |
5th | 2 |
6th | 1 |
7th or worse | 0 |
There are 12 positions, but only one other racer at a time (the nearest opponent) can be seen on the track. The player can choose to race qualifying laps to determine the starting position in the race; otherwise, the player starts in the last position. The player can race as many qualifying laps as desired; to finish, pause the game with PAUSE or START and press +
. The game uses the best lap time to determine the starting position if the player raced multiple laps. Before starting the race, the player can see the standings for the course to see the times for each position.
The Free Practice mode lets the player run practice laps on any course. Every course has a message from Ayrton Senna containing information and advice, and the player can customize the equipment of the vehicle before starting. Practice races last indefinitely; to retire, pause the game with PAUSE or START and press +
.
Vs. Game is a competitive race between two players. It is exclusive to the Game Gear version and only appears when two consoles are linked via a Gear-to-Gear Cable. Players can choose the number of laps (1 to 5), number of races (1, 3, or 5), and the course. Vehicles can be customized as in the other modes.
Machine set
Before each race, players can customize the parts used their cars:
- Mission: Chooses between six-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. The manual transmission has a higher top speed.
- Gear: Chooses between the Model-A or Model-B gearbox. The Model-A has a higher maximum speed, but the Model-B has faster acceleration.
- Tires: Chooses between the B-Comp. or C-Comp. tires. The B-Comp. tires are harder and more durable, but the C-Comp. tires are softer and have better traction.
- Wing: Chooses between the Type-0 or Type-45 airfoil. The Type-0 wing has a 0-degree angle, which gives the car a higher top speed, but the Type-45 wing has a 45-degree angle, which gives the car better stability when turning.
