Scratch Golf (スクラッチ ゴルフ) is a golf game for the Sega Game Gear.

Driving and putting

The game is a golf game with an overhead perspective that can be played by one or two players (taking turns). There are two courses (A and B) consisting of 18 holes each.

Before each round, players choose their clubs from four predetermined sets and choose the material of the drivers. The metal drivers hit balls the furthest distance but are the most affected by wind, the carbon drivers hit balls a moderate distance and are slightly affected by wind, and the persimmon drivers hit balls the shortest but are not affected by the wind.

For each shot, the game shows the lie of the ball. The player first chooses the direction of the shot with Up or Down. A compass indicates the wind direction and strength. The player can also pan the hole with Left or Right to see the location of the green or any hazards. Then the player chooses a club; the game automatically makes a recommendation. The player then sets the stance. A closed stance (left foot forward) causes the ball to draw (hook slightly to the left); an open stance (right foot forward) causes the ball to fade (slice slightly to the right). Then player determines the point at which the club hits the ball by pressing 2 at the desired point while a cursor scans the ball from top to bottom. Hitting the right edge causes the ball to fly to the left, and hitting the left edges causes it to fly to the right. A lower hit increases the height at the cost of the distance traveled.

Finally, the player uses a swing meter to determine the power and timing of the shot. The player presses 2 to start the swing, which causes a cursor to move to the end of the meter and then back. The player presses 2 again to set the hitting power (closer to the end of the meter is more powerful) and then 2 once again to set the impact timing (in the red area for the best shot). Landing the last button press in the green area or failing to press the button before the cursor returns to the start of the meter results in a whiff and the player starts the shot over again.

When putting, the player only needs to set the direction and swing.

Modes

With one player, the following modes are available:

  • Scratch Mode: The player plays 18 holes against three computer contestants (whose play is not shown but whose results appear on the scorecard after each hole).
  • Exercise Mode: The player can choose any hole to play on either course. The player is given the option to redo any shot after taking it.
  • Super Exercise Mode: The player can pick any hole and the carry for each club (the distance the ball travels). The player can set the wind direction for each shot and directly set the ball hitting point and numerically set the power (rather than using the swing meter).

With two players, the following modes are available:

  • Scratch Mode: The players play 18 holes against each other and two computer contestants (whose play is not shown but whose results appear on the scorecard after each hole). The winner of the round is the player who has the lowest overall score for all 18 holes.
  • Match Play Mode: The players play 18 holes in match play format. The winner of the round is the player who has the lowest overall score for all 18 holes. After the first shot, the player who is furthest from the hole hits until landing a shot beyond the other player.
