Revenge of the Ninja is a full-motion video game for the Sega Mega-CD. It was released exclusively in America. The game is an interactive movie produced by Japanese animation studio Toei Animation.

Story

A skilled and daring teenage ninja named Hayate must infiltrate the Castle of Evil and battle its ruler, Lougi, to rescue Princess Terri. Hayate must survive a collection of deathtraps and defeat a variety of mythological creatures and other adversaries on his quest to save the princess and destroy the castle.

Gameplay

The game is an interactive movie in which players to guide Hayate through the castle and its numerous perils. The game contains traps and creatures that requires players to dodge or attack them at specific moments. The D-pad moves Hayate in a direction and A, B, or C attacks (usually with Hayate's sword). If a player makes a mistake, one life decreases, and when the player runs out of lives, the game ends.

The game has three selectable difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, and Hard). When playing on Easy and Normal, the game flashes an arrow to indicate the correct direction or flashes a button to indicate that Hayate should attack. On Hard mode, actions are cued with "Action!", but the player must decide the correct action. The amount of time given to react is also shortened as the difficulty increases. On all difficulty levels, some events have a "guiding light" in the animation that hints at the right action.

The player can rewatch the game as a movie (with the same randomized traps and the same choices made) after completing it on Normal or Hard difficulty.

Levels

The order of levels 2 through 15 is randomized for each playthrough.

History

Renovation sent "Master of the Ninja Arts" diplomas to players who mailed them photographic proof that they had beaten the game on Hard mode.[2][3]

Legacy

The game was bundled with Time Gal in the Sega Saturn release Time Gal & Ninja Hayate.

Versions

The original arcade version was released by Taito in 1984 as Ninja Hayate (忍者ハヤテ). It was a LaserDisc game similar to Dragon's Lair. The video in the Mega-CD version is reduced in size and dithered to accommodate the platform's technical limitations. The original arcade version had no music except the opening and ending theme, but the Mega-CD version features newly composed music.
