Story
Set 1,000 years after the events of Phantasy Star Online 2, the next generation of ARKS settled on Planet Halpha. Conflict would soon arise when a new threat from outer space, the DOLLS, begin appearing with no explanation. Around the same time that the DOLLS began appearing, mysterious individuals appeared from Meteorn that fell from the sky. Despite possessing no memories of their past, these individuals possess skills which make them effective in combatting the DOLLS and ultimately join ARKS to combat this threat.
Relation to Phantasy Star Online 2
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is essentially an update which overhauls the original Phantasy Star Online 2 into an entirely new experience, overwriting the existing client from "Phantasy Star Online 2" to "Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.
With that said, Phantasy Star Online 2's original content can still be played. Expanding on the original's Block System, the original Phantasy Star Online 2 and Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis exists in their own blocks known as "PSO2" and "PSO2:NGS" blocks. Players can freely swap between either through a Ryuker Device in a PSO2:NGS block or through a Block Portal in a PSO2 block. In addition, players can also choose to start in either Block from the Character Selection screen.
Aside from being able to play Phantasy Star Online 2's content, certain data is usable between the two blocks:
- Character Appearance (including emotes and accessories).
- ARKS Cash (AC) and Star Gems (SG).
- Weapons, Units and Mags, though these have different behaviour when used in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.
With that said however the following data will remain exclusive to their respective blocks:
- Items of the following category; Consumable items, Skill Rings, Boost Items, Materials and Furnishing.
- Character Growth including Level, EXP, Class Skills, Photon Arts and Techniques.
Lastly, as New Genesis features a new graphical engine, the graphics of content from the original Phantasy Star Online 2 will also be updated when in a PSO2 Block.
History
In 2018 several job listings for an unnamed Phantasy Star project were spotted though no announcements were made regarding what the project could be. [1] Eventually during their 2020 roadmap, SEGA announced that the end of EPISODE 6 would not be followed up with EPISODE 7, instead announcing that a 'major update' would be releasing, with the nature of the update being kept vague.
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, would be unveiled to Western audiences via the Xbox Games Showcase 2020 event with a teaser trailer, later going up on the North American PSO2 YouTube channel. A localized Japanese version of the trailer was put up on the Japanese Twitter and YouTube channel. An English and Japanese website would eventually go live.
A day after the initial announcement a second trailer and more details were unveiled including the nature of the release, its connectivity with Phantasy Star Online 2 and the fate of the original game. In addition, in-game campaigns to celebrate the announcement were released across the Japanese and Western version of Phantasy Star Online 2.
The expansion's planned to be released worldwide in both Japan and the West some-time in 2021 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Phantasy Star Online.
Versions
Much like Phantasy Star Online 2, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, will have two different versions; a Japanese version and a Western version with no cross-compatibility. Like its predecessor, the Japanese version will use a SEGA ID to authenticate and link accounts across multiple platforms while the Western version will be relying on an Xbox Live account for cross-compatibility with Phantasy Star Online 2 and cross-platform support.
