True Lies (トゥルーライズ) is a Sega Mega Drive and Sega Game Gear game based on the movie with the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

An Sega Master System GG2SMS hacks was released in January 2017.

Gameplay

Controls can be customized: The default layout is: A for fixing the viewing direction, B for shooting and C for rolling; this grants temporal invincibility. The top buttons X, Y and Z are used to switch weapons. On a three button controller the game has to be paused to switch weapons.

Harry can take multiple hits before going down; health is restored by collecting medipacks. Most stages also feature non-hostile NPCs that Harry should not attack. Harry will be penalized for every 3 causalities.

Still shots from the movie are shown between stages. It is identical to the SNES version in terms of content, but wasn't optimized to make use of the systems higher resolution. However, the six button controller is supported. The game is played from a top down view, very similar to e.g. Techno Clash and takes a mission based approach: players have to find certain objects, defeat a certain enemy or flee from a section.

With a playthrough taking more than two hours, it's extraordinarily long considering the genre and time it was released in. Gore, another uncommon feature, is also present in form of blood splats and death sequences. Progress is recorded through passwords which are given after completing a mission.

Weapons

  • Handgun (default, unlimited ammo)
  • Shotgun
  • Machinegun
  • Grenades

All weapons aside from the Handgun have limited ammo. Weapons and extra ammo are scattered throughout stages and will be reset with each new stage.

Versions

The Sega Mega Drive game rom is identical in all releases and is not region protected. Comparing the SNES and Sega Mega Drive release, the SNES version has more vivid graphics thanks to it's color palette, although the sound is a bit muffled. It appears the SNES version was the lead development version and was then ported to the Sega Mega Drive. This is indicated by the use of low resolution mode (which is the SNES's standard resolution) and color usage, with plenty of dithering used to compensate for the systems 64 colors at once limit.
