Worms 3D is an entry in the Worms series of games, developed by Team 17. Worms 3D was the first attempt at bringing this series into the third dimension.
The game was originally published in Europe by Sega for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. In early 2004 Acclaim Entertainment published the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and PC in North America, however the Xbox port was delayed in this region. When it eventually arrived (early 2005), this too was published by Sega, under the name Worms 3D: Special Edition, as by this point, Acclaim had declared bankruptcy and had ceased trading. Despite this, the box still refers to it under the original name, and the game is identical to other versions, featuring the same changes seen in other Acclaim versions (namely the removal of the licensed song Coconuts by Junior Senior, and replacing it with an arrangement of the Worms theme, which would later be used for 3D's successor, Worms 4: Mayhem).
While 3D itself never got a re-release, it was used as a basis for the 2011 game Worms Ultimate Mayhem, an enhanced port of 4: Mayhem that, alongside that game's original content, featured the full campaign of 3D.
Sega would also publish the sequel, Worms Forts: Under Siege, which would also be the last game in the series to be released by them. Later games were published by other companies or by Team 17 themselves.
