Indy Formula (インディフォーミュラ) is an eight-player version of Indy 500, typically seen in larger arcade venues. It was created likely as a replacement for Virtua Formula, a similar eight-player setup designed for Virtua Racing. Virtua Formula installations were often updated to Indy Formula ones.
Unlike Virtua Formula, the Indy Formula software is thought to be identical to regular Indy 500 machines (to the point where the game still calls itself Indy 500); the only distinction is the much larger cabinet design that attempts to simulate movement, and external Indy Formula branding. Like Virtua Formula, Indy Formula required an operator to run, and was found at Sega World, Joypolis, and GameWorks venues.
Most Indy Formula attractions were retired in the early 2000s.
