TMS Entertainment Co., Ltd. (株式会社トムス・エンタテインメント) is a Japanese animation studio. It is currently owned by Sega Sammy Holdings.

History

The company which became TMS Entertainment was established in October 1946 as a textile manufacturer before expanding into other businesses such as animal breeding, fur and amusement centers. After a number of multiple company name changes, the company changed its name to Kyokuichi Corporation in 1991, and began an alliance with Sega Enterprises and Sega Toys in 1992. In 1995, Kyokuichi merged with animation studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha, absorbed TMS and established the Kyokuichi Tokyo Movie division to continue doing work until 2000, when they renamed themselves to TMS Entertainment.

In 2005, Sega's parent company, Sega Sammy Holdings, upped their shares of TMS Entertainment to 51%, formerly making the bussiness a subsidiary of the group. It has since been transferred to Sega Holdings (itself a subsidiary holding company of Sega Sammy). In 2008, in order to exit from the amusement center business, TMS transferred its amusement center division to a separate wholly-owned subsidiary known as AG Square as part of a planned sale of the division to GEO. The sale was ultimately called off that same year and said company would merge with Be Re-inc leading to TMS becoming a pure animation studio.

TMS Entertainment has worked on a wide variety of animation produced in Japan, such as Lupin the Third, Detective Conan, D.Gray-man, and many others. They also co-produced many foreign projects in countries like France and Italy, as well as doing outsourced work. Some of these include Inspector Gadget, Ulysses 31, CyberSix among others.

Being part of the same group of companies, TMS Entertainment is Sega's go-to animation studio whenever 2D animation is needed.
