History
The company which became TMS Entertainment was established in October 1946, however it was not until 19th August 1964 that it formed an animation studio, Tokyo Movie (東京ムービー). Inspired by the 1963 series television series, Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy in the US, based on the 1952 comic run of the same name, and widely considered to be the first successful "anime"), Tokyo Movie spent its formative years producing animated shows for Japanese television broadcaster TBS.
In 1977, Tokyo Movie became Tokyo Movie Shinsha (東京ムービー新社) (TMS). Its parent company changed its name to Kyokuichi Corporation in 1991, and was subsequently bought into by Sega in 1992. This gave Sega access to an animation studio, allowing for the animated sequences in games such as Astal in 1995. 1995 also saw Kyokuichi and TMS merge into one entity, which briefly traded as TMS-Kyokuichi before changing its name to TMS Entertainment in 2000.
In 2005, Sega's parent company, Sega Sammy Holdings, upped their shares of TMS Entertainment to 51%, formerly making the bussiness a subsidiary of the group. It has since been transferred to Sega Holdings (itself a subsidiary holding company of Sega Sammy).
TMS Entertainment has worked on a wide variety of animation produced in Japan, such as Lupin the Third, Detective Conan, D.Gray-man, and many others. They also co-produced many foreign projects in countries like France and Italy, as well as doing outsourced work. Some of these include Inspector Gadget, Ulysses 31, CyberSix and others.
Being part of the same group of companies, TMS Entertainment is Sega's go-to animation studio whenever 2D animation is needed.
