Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a side-scrolling action game based on the movie of the same name. It was developed by Bits Studio and published by Flying Edge for the Sega Mega Drive in 1993.

A Sega Mega-CD version (presumably based off this game) was planned for a US release in August 1993[4], but was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Story

Terminator 2 MD, Introduction.png

T-800 Terminator

The malevolent artificial intelligence Skynet sends a T-1000 Terminator, a highly advanced, liquid metal killing machine, back in time to 1995 to kill the future leader of the human resistance, John Connor, when he is a child. The resistance sends back a less-advanced, reprogrammed T-800 Terminator to protect Connor and ensure the future of humanity.

Gameplay

Terminator 2 MD, Pause Menu.png

Pause HUD

The game is a side-scrolling action platformer played as the T-800 Terminator. The Terminator moves with Left and Right and crouches and picks up items with Down. It enters doorways with Up, climbs ladders with Up (and descends them with Down), and climbs stairs with Up-left and Up-right (and descends them with Down-left and Down-right). It jumps with C. Before acquiring weapons, it knees with A and punches with B. After it is armed, it fires its pistol with A, which has unlimited ammunition, or fires a secondary weapon (such as a shotgun) with B, which has limited ammunition. Weapons can be aimed in any direction with the D-Pad (except directly downwards, which fires from a crouched position instead). The minigun and auto-rifle weapons have rapid-fire.

Levels have varying objectives that must be completed before making it to the exit. Levels are buildings consisting of multiple rooms and floors that must be explored to fulfill the objectives. Enemies continually spawn to attack the Terminator. Objectives are declared at the start of the level and can be checked by pausing the game with  START . In some levels, the pause HUD also allows the Terminator to decide if John or Sarah are following it (by selecting their name with Up or Down and pressing B) when they are in the same room. Some level objectives require John or Sarah to be present, but they risk being injured when they are following. Sarah provides support fire.

In between levels are vehicle segments, played from an overhead isometric perspective. In these segments, the player must reach a destination by following the directions indicated on an on-screen compass rose. The vehicles are controlled with the D-Pad, with Up straightening the vehicle out. They accelerate forwards with B, decelerate or move in reverse with C, and brake with B+C. They activate turbo with A for a high-speed boost.

The Terminator loses power when it takes damage from enemies. It has two batteries. The first starts at 100%; when it is depleted, the Terminator switches to its secondary power, which starts at 50%. If this power source is exhausted, the Terminator is destroyed and the game ends. If John or Sarah are critically wounded, they can be revived by crouching over them, which transfers the Terminator's power to restore their health. The Terminator has a limited amount of time to reach John or Sarah when they are incapacitated, and failing to do so in time ends the game.

Items

The Terminator's HUD highlights items when they appear. Items are collected by crouching over them.

Once the explosives have been planted, the player has a limited amount of time to leave the building before it explodes. The Terminator can find an automatic rifle here (though it is not as powerful as the rotary cannon).
