A scientist named Dr. Edward Bilstein has discovered how to harness the power of the human mind into a physical energy source he calls "plasma power." However, Bilstein is arrested and banished to a floating prison satellite around the Planet Zeta for experimenting on human subjects. There, he goes mad, creates a cyborg body, and escapes from prison. He raises an army called the Fourth Empire and begins terrorizing the galaxy. In response, the Earth Federation organizes a program called "Star Gladiator" to gather the best fighters to utilize plasma weapons against their creator, which results in Bilstein being slain by the intergalactic bounty hunter Hayato Kanzaki. |
The fall of the Fourth Empire restores peace to the galaxy. However, rumors have started circulating that Bilstein has returned in a new cybernetic body and begun rebuilding the forces of the Fourth Empire. | The fall of the Fourth Empire restores peace to the galaxy. + | Plasma Sword is the sequel to Star Gladiator, Capcom's first 3D fighting game, which uses a science fiction theme and character designs heavily inspired by the Star Wars series. It reworks the control scheme from the first game and replaces the floating stages with endless 2D planes that have no ring-outs, and it greatly expands the character roster by giving all of the returning characters mirrored counterparts and adding four unique characters. Plasma Strikes were changed to work more like Super Combos in the Street Fighter series rather than acting solely as combo finishers. Matches consist of two fighters trying to deplete each other's vitality gauge. Rounds have a time limit of 90 seconds, and matches are fought to the best of three rounds.
+ | |||
+ | Characters move with left and right and crouch with down. They can backstep or dash with left left (or left+A) or right right (or right+A). They jump upward with up and jump behind and ahead with upleft or upright. They can sidestep into the background with A or into the foreground with down+A, which can be used to avoid attacks (though some attacks can hit toward the sides and cannot be avoided this way). Every character wields a plasma weapon, and they can attack with a horizontal slash with X or a vertical slash with Y. They can also kick with B. Characters use different attacks depending on whether they are standing, crouching, dashing, before the apex of a jump, or after the apex of a jump. Every character has multiple chains of button combinations, called Plasma Combos, that allow the player to easily link together combos. Characters also have various special moves that are performed with particular button combinations. Special moves can be included in Plasma Combos. Several characters have moves that change their stance to face the other way, which changes the direction of special moves where the character moves to the side.
+ | |||
+ | Characters can block basic attacks and reduce most of the damage from special moves by holding the D-Pad in the opposite direction of the opponent. Blocking can be done while standing or crouching, but characters cannot block in midair. Standing vertical attacks cannot be blocked while crouching; conversely, standing horizontal attacks generally swing too high to hit a crouching opponent. Characters can grab and throw opponents by pressing X+Y when in close range. If the opponent is not close enough to grab, the character misses, becoming momentarily vulnerable to counterattack. A crouching opponent can be thrown while standing or crouching, but a standing opponent can only be thrown while standing. Throws cannot be blocked. Downed opponents can be hit by low attacks or by pursuit attacks performed by holding up and pressing any attack button. Knocked down characters can recover by pressing left or right to roll in that direction, down to get up faster, A to roll into the background, or down+A to roll into the foreground.
+ | |||
+ | Each player has a Plasma Power gauge that starts with one full level but can gain up to three levels. Plasma Power is gained when the character is damaged, performs a normal attack that hits, or performs a special move regardless of whether it hits. Plasma Power can be spent on Plasma Reflects and Plasma Revenges (which cost half a level of the gauge) or Plasma Strikes and Plasma Fields (which cost a full level of the gauge).
+ | |||
+ | The Plasma Reverses are two special defensive moves that can be used whenever the player has at least half a level of the gauge. A Plasma Reflect is done by pressing X+A and surrounds the character in a protective plasma sphere for a brief moment. If the opponent attacks the plasma sphere, they are shocked and momentarily stunned. A Plasma Revenge is done by pressing Y+A. It is similar to a Plasma Reflect in that it surrounds the character in a plasma sphere, but the character automatically responds with a quick counterattack if hit by the opponent.
+ | |||
+ | Plasma Strikes are super special moves that cost one level of the gauge. These vary by character but are usually flashier than regular special moves and hit multiple times, doing heavy damage if not missed. Every character additionally has a unique special skill called a Plasma Field, which also costs one level of the gauge. When activated by pressing Y+B, the character emit a sphere of plasma energy around them. This can be done in midair, and it can be blocked by the opponent. If the opposing character is hit by the sphere, both fighters are temporarily enclosed in four invisible walls, making a smaller space where it is easy to corner the opponent, and the attacking player is given a special benefit that varies by character.

− | *Arcade: | + | *Arcade: A one-player mode where the player chooses a character and fights matches against multiple opponents in a predetermined order (depending on the character selected). The fifth and eighth fights are preceded by dialogue scenes. The player earns Battle Ability points for each match depending on their performance. The eighth match is normally the final boss, but a hidden final boss is unlocked (by announcing "Here Comes a New Challenger" during the character's ending) if the player has earned enough Battle Ability points by the end of the eighth match (70,000 points for 1-round matches, 95,000 points for 3-round matches, or 110,000 points for 5-round matches). The character's full ending is only seen if this hidden final boss is unlocked and defeated. The game ends if the player loses a match but can be continued an unlimited number of times. A second player can challenge the first player to a match by pressing Start at any point. |
*Versus: A two-player mode where each player chooses a character and fights a match against one another. Players can set a handicap and can choose any stage. Players can have differently sized rosters and can choose the same character multiple times. The characters then fight matches consisting of a single round, and a character is eliminated from that player's roster when defeated. Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein, known as Star Gladiator 2: Nightmare of Bilstein (スターグラディエイター2 ナイトメア オブ ビルシュタイン) in Japan is a 3D fighting game created by Capcom. It was originally released in arcades in 1998, then ported to the Sega Dreamcast and released in 1999 in Japan and in 2000 in the rest of the world.
It is the sequel to Star Gladiator, an earlier fighting game that was exclusively ported to the Sony PlayStation.

Story
In the 24th century, humans have colonized the galaxy and made peaceful contact with alien civilizations.
Gameplay
Plasma Sword is the sequel to Star Gladiator, Capcom's first 3D fighting game, which uses a science fiction theme and character designs heavily inspired by the Star Wars series.
Characters move with and and crouch with . They can backstep or dash with (or +) or (or +). They jump upward with and jump behind and ahead with or . They can sidestep into the background with or into the foreground with +, which can be used to avoid attacks (though some attacks can hit toward the sides and cannot be avoided this way). Every character wields a plasma weapon, and they can attack with a horizontal slash with or a vertical slash with . They can also kick with .
Characters can block basic attacks and reduce most of the damage from special moves by holding the D-Pad in the opposite direction of the opponent. Blocking can be done while standing or crouching, but characters cannot block in midair. Standing vertical attacks cannot be blocked while crouching; conversely, standing horizontal attacks generally swing too high to hit a crouching opponent. Characters can grab and throw opponents by pressing + when in close range. If the opponent is not close enough to grab, the character misses, becoming momentarily vulnerable to counterattack. A crouching opponent can be thrown while standing or crouching, but a standing opponent can only be thrown while standing. Throws cannot be blocked. Downed opponents can be hit by low attacks or by pursuit attacks performed by holding and pressing any attack button. Knocked down characters can recover by pressing or to roll in that direction, to get up faster, to roll into the background, or + to roll into the foreground.
Each player has a Plasma Power gauge that starts with one full level but can gain up to three levels.
The Plasma Reverses are two special defensive moves that can be used whenever the player has at least half a level of the gauge. A Plasma Reflect is done by pressing + and surrounds the character in a protective plasma sphere for a brief moment. If the opponent attacks the plasma sphere, they are shocked and momentarily stunned. A Plasma Revenge is done by pressing +. It is similar to a Plasma Reflect in that it surrounds the character in a plasma sphere, but the character automatically responds with a quick counterattack if hit by the opponent.
Plasma Strikes are super special moves that cost one level of the gauge. These vary by character but are usually flashier than regular special moves and hit multiple times, doing heavy damage if not missed. Every character additionally has a unique special skill called a Plasma Field, which also costs one level of the gauge. When activated by pressing +, the character emit a sphere of plasma energy around them. This can be done in midair, and it can be blocked by the opponent. If the opposing character is hit by the sphere, both fighters are temporarily enclosed in four invisible walls, making a smaller space where it is easy to corner the opponent, and the attacking player is given a special benefit that varies by character.
Modes
The game has the following modes:
- Arcade: A one-player mode where the player chooses a character and fights matches against multiple opponents in a predetermined order (depending on the character selected).
- Versus: A two-player mode where each player chooses a character and fights a match against one another. Players can set a handicap and can choose any stage. The game keeps track of each player's wins and losses.
- Group Battle: A one- or two-player mode where each player chooses a roster of 1 to 5 characters (it can also be set to "CPU vs CPU" to watch the computer play). Players can have differently sized rosters and can choose the same character multiple times. The characters then fight matches consisting of a single round, and a character is eliminated from that player's roster when defeated. Players can choose whether the surviving character recovers vitality completely after each match, partially depending on the time remaining (with more vitality recovered for defeating the opponent quicker), or not at all. Whichever player successfully eliminates all of the other player's characters wins.
- Training: A one-player training mode where the player chooses a character and an opponent and can practice moves. The player can set the behavior of the opponent (Freeze, Guard, or Active). The game shows a tree of the selected character's Plasma Combos and the damage done by the last sequence of moves.
Players can choose from eight difficulty levels and eight damage levels. There are also options to set the time limit (from 10 to 90 seconds in increments of 10 seconds or infinity) and the number of rounds per match (1, 3, or 5). High scores and options are saved to a VMU.
Characters
Note: Move lists assume that the character is facing right. When facing left, and should be reversed.
and in the move lists follow the notation used by the game, which does not correspond to the buttons used on the Dreamcast controller by default (which are for horizontal slash and for vertical slash).
Pressing is equivalent to pressing +K (used for Plasma Fields), and pressing is equivalent to pressing + (used for throws and Plasma Strikes).
Playable
All of the characters from Star Gladiator return, except for Rimgal and the hidden character Kappah. The final bosses Bilstein and Ghost Bilstein and the hidden character Blood are now normally playable characters. Every returning character has a "mirrored" counterpart who shares largely the same moveset but with a different story and design and unique Plasma Strike moves.
There are four completely new characters, two immediately playable (Rain and Byakko) and two hidden (Kaede and Rai-On). These characters do not have mirrored counterparts, although Rai-On is based on Byakko and has a similar but not identical moveset.
Hidden
- Main article: Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein/Hidden content.
These two characters appear as hidden opponents if the player fulfills the following conditions while playing the Arcade mode: finish at least one round with a Plasma Field, finish at least two rounds with Perfect victories (not losing any vitality), finish at least three rounds with a Plasma Strike, do not finish any rounds with a Time Over, and do not use a continue (though the player can still lose a round). The opponent selected is chosen randomly. Defeating the character unlocks him or her permanently in all modes (which is saved to a VMU). They can be also be unlocked to play using cheat codes.

History
Legacy
Hayato Kanzaki appears as a guest character in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. June and Saturn make cameos in Hayato's win poses. June also appears in the Dee Jay's Bar and Toy Shop stages in Pocket Fighter and in the Shanghai stage in Capcom vs. SNK 2.
The game was re-released as part of Capcom Fighting Collection 2, released for Windows PCs, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2025. This version includes online matchmaking and allows Kaede and Rai-On to be unlocked to play via a setting.
Versions
The arcade version of Plasma Sword runs on the Sony ZN-2 arcade system, which was also used by Capcom for Rival Schools: United by Fate, Street Fighter EX2, and Tech Romancer. Though this arcade platform was derived from the Sony PlayStation game console, Plasma Sword was only ported to the Sega Dreamcast. The Dreamcast port has enhanced graphics, including more detailed models.
