During development the game was known as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (or just Young Indiana Jones), tying into the television show of the same name. All references to the (then cancelled) show, and its owner Paramount Pictures are missing from the final game. The project seems to have been troubled, with initial plans to release in late 1992, however the final builds of the game are dated January 1994, suggesting a delay of more than a year.
Instruments of Chaos was once planned for release on the the Sega Mega-CD, being shown at both Winter CES 1993[3] and Summer CES 1993[4] with a view of being released in June[3], later July 1993[5]). This version would have had "18 tracks of studio recorded CD music"[6].
