Story
In 1999, the Biobeast Force, led by Godkaiser Hell, swiftly and successfully destroys the Earth's current state of existence in a matter of months, driving the few survivors underground. One such survivor, Dr. Koji Kabuto, creates the Mazinger-Z, a suit of armor he wears to become capable of battling the Biobeasts to save what remains of Earth.
Gameplay
The game blends a side-scrolling beat-'em-up with a one-on-one fighting game. Players control Koji Kabuto in the Mazinger-Z armor through six stages, each set in a different location on the ruined Earth. The first three segments of each stage follow the conventional beat-'em-up format, and the fourth segment is a boss fight that more closely resembles a one-on-one fighting game. The Mazinger-Z can change size; the boss characters are much larger than it in the beat-'em-up segments but comparable size in the fighting segments.
In the beat-'em-up segments, the Mazinger-Z can walk with and and can move forward and backward in the plane with and . It can dash with and . It jumps with and attacks with . Depending on the distance to the opponent, the attack can be a throw, a kick, or a sword slash. Pressing multiple times in sequence performs a combo; pressing repeatedly quickly performs the "wall of steel," a rapid series of sword thrusts. The Mazinger-Z can also attack after jumping and do a diving stab with + while in mid-air. It can do a wider cut by attacking after a dash or a spinning slash by attacking in the air while dashing. It also has a special attack executed with that hits enemies around it at the cost of some health.
During the boss segment, gameplay changes to a fighting game format. In these fights, the Mazinger-Z moves with and and crouches with . It guards with , attacks with , and jumps with . Blocked special attacks still inflict a small amount of damage. Pressing a direction while attacking changes the attack. For example, holding away from the opponent while attacking performs a wide slash, and pressing with attacking performs an upward slash.
The Mazinger-Z is defeated when it loses all of its health. If the player has extra lives remaining, it is revived. In the beat-'em-up sections, it is revived in place after a moment; in the fighting sections, the fight starts over. If the player runs out of lives, the game ends but can be continued from the beginning of the stage as long as the player has continues remaining. The player can choose the number of starting lives and continues as well as the difficulty level (Easy, Normal, or Hard) in the options. The player is awarded extra lives at 100,000, 300,000, and 700,000 points.
