The premise is very similar to the Japanese TV series ''[[wikipedia:Monkey (TV series)|Saiyūki]]'' (西遊記), or ''Monkey'' as it is known in the west. Like ''Cloud Master'', ''Monkey'' features a martial artist dressed in red, who flies around on a small cloud.

Cloud Master is a 1989 shoot-'em-up for the Sega Master System, a port of an arcade title. The game was ported by Opera House and published by Sega.

It was originally released in arcades by Hot-B and Taito in 1988 under the Japanese name Chuka Taisen; putting Cloud Master in a Japanese console produces this title. Unfortunately, the game was developed and released just after Sega stopped releasing titles for the Master System in Japan. The Master System version is one of only two non-Japan versions of the game for many years, and is the only release to use a title besides "Chuka Taisen" for non-Japan purposes.

It appears to be a typical horizontal scrolling shooter, but uses a fantastical Chinese theme based on the classic novel Xiyouji. The player assumes the role of Mike Chen, or rather Son Wokong, who rides around on a cloud and shoots energy from his hands.

Insector X is a sequel to this game in design, though not in theme.
