International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (ISS Deluxe) is a football game released by Konami for the Sega Mega Drive in 1996. It is a sequel to International Superstar Soccer, a Super NES game originally released in late 1994, and the second in the long-running International Superstar Soccer series by KCE Osaka, which was eventually replaced by the alternative Pro Evolution Soccer series by KCE Tokyo.

Gameplay

ISS Deluxe is an arcade-style football game played at an oblique viewing angle. The game lacks any sort of official licensing, so opts for 36 national teams comprised of fictional players (often loosely based on their real-life counterparts).

Unlike previous Mega Drive games handled by Chris Hülsbeck which relied on his own A.U.D.I.O.S. Wave Slave MD sound driver, for this title a custom music and sound effects player programmed by Factor 5 developer Willi Bäcker was used instead. ^[4]

History

Legacy

The earlier Super NES version of ISS Deluxe is notorious in South America for being redistributed as localised ROM hacks, replacing the teams and players with those from Argentina, Colombia or Peru. This has happened to this Mega Drive version too, becoming Futbol Argentino 96.

Versions

As a later Mega Drive release aimed at countries where association football is considered a national sport, ISS Deluxe is largely identical to its Super NES counterpart, save for minor palette differences (and a checkerboarding effect to mask the lack of alpha transparency) and lower quality audio samples. No attempt was made to let the game run at a full 320x224 (or 320x240) resolution.
