Gameplay
Mega Drive version
The game is a platformer played as Speedy Gonzales, the "Fastest Mouse in all Mexico." There are four worlds with three levels in each. Levels are large and emphasize exploration. In each level, Speedy must find hidden rooms containing his mouse compatriots and rescue all of them to open the exit to the level (which becomes marked by a yellow arrow after every mouse has been found). At the end of the world, Speedy fights Sylvester.
Speedy moves with and and ducks with . He jumps with . He can defeat most enemies by jumping on them. While jumping, he can punch upwards with to hit flying enemies. Speedy can also throw sombreros at enemies with , which boomerang back toward Speedy after they are thrown. They can be thrown while ducking or jumping. Sombreros are limited, but Speedy can find more in the levels. In some levels, Speedy has a lasso, which he can use with + to hook onto rock protrusions. He can then climb the rope with to reach higher platforms. He also enters doorways with . When underwater, Speedy swims with .
Speedy can run in place by holding and then dash forward at high speed by releasing . He is momentarily invulnerable after taking off. Dashing lets him jump higher and farther. He can also break holes in soft ground by running in place. Dashing expends Speedy's chili pepper gauge. If the gauge runs out, he skids a short distance instead of running. Speedy can replenish the gauge by finding chili peppers in the levels. Flashing objects, such as crates, can be destroyed by dashing into them or throwing sombreros at them, revealing hidden items or passages.
When Speedy takes damage from an enemy or a hazard, he loses health, depicted by a cheese wheel. If he loses all of his health, he loses a life and must restart the level (the game remembers any previously found mice). Speedy can replenish his health by finding cheese in the levels.
After defeating Sylvester at the end of each world, if Speedy collected all of the carrots in the world, Bugs Bunny gives the player a password for continuing the game.
