The basic aim of the game is to get to a goal, which often involves collecting keys, opening chests and moving blocks. {{A}} kicks, {{C}} jumps. Pressing {{C}} twice causes the player to attack blocks underneath the player. Pressing {{B}} while next to a stone block allows the player to pick it up, and then he/she can drop it with the same button.

The archaeologist moves with {{left}} or {{right}} and jumps with {{C}}. He kicks with {{A}}, which can be used to break open chests or to kick stone blocks (causing them to slide across the screen until they hit a wall). He can kick directly below him by pressing {{C}} again while in midair, which can be used to destroy chests or blocks below him. When standing next to a stone block, the archaeologist can pick it up with {{B}}. While carrying a stone block, the archaeologist hunches his back and can fit into tighter passages, or he can set it down by pressing {{B}} again, which can be done to move blocks out of the way or stack them to use as a platform. A stone block can be placed halfway onto another block or halfway into a crevice, letting them be staggered into steps. The game shows a flashing marker indicating where the block will be placed if the player waits a moment while holding a stone block. The archaeologist can still kick and jump while holding a stone block (though his jump is reduced to one block high while holding a stone block rather than two).

Gameplay

Pyramid Magic is a puzzle platforming game. The player controls an archaeologist who is exploring an ancient pyramid. Each round is a single screen with no scrolling and represents a room of the pyramid, with a ghostly mummy guarding the exit. In every round, the archaeologist must break open a wooden chest to obtain a red key, then use the red key to open a red chest to obtain a green key, then use the green key to open a green chest to release a magical parchment that banishes the ghostly mummy and clears the way to the exit. To make his way through the room, the archaeologist must rearrange stone blocks found on the floor.

The archaeologist moves with Left or Right and jumps with C. He kicks with A, which can be used to break open chests or to kick stone blocks (causing them to slide across the screen until they hit a wall). He can kick directly below him by pressing C again while in midair, which can be used to destroy chests or blocks below him. When standing next to a stone block, the archaeologist can pick it up with B. While carrying a stone block, the archaeologist hunches his back and can fit into tighter passages, or he can set it down by pressing B again, which can be done to move blocks out of the way or stack them to use as a platform.

The archaeologist loses a life and restarts the round if he touches the mummy or if he crushes himself with a stone block (which happens if he falls to a lower level while holding a stone block). The player has a limited number of lives, and the game ends if the player runs out. The game awards points for completing each round, with more points awarded for completing the round in a shorter amount of time. The timer does not reset when the player loses a life. An extra life is given for every 2,500 points earned; up to three extra lives can be earned on each round.

It is possible to trap the archaeologist in a situation where the round can no longer be completed. The player can restart the round (at the cost of a life) by pressing C+ START . The player can also skip to the next round by pressing A+ START , though this can only be used three times during the course of the game.
