The King of Fighters: Evolution is an updated version of The King of Fighters '99 that was released for the Sega Dreamcast. First released in Japan on March 2000, the game did not see an American release until May 2001. Like it's predecessor, The King of Fighters: Dream Match 1999, the game was never released in Europe.
Changes from KoF '99 include 3D stages and the addition of striker characters. In the Japanese version, the game is compatible with the Dreamcast to Neo Geo Pocket Color link cable, which allows you to transfer your points won in The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise to speed up the leveling process for Extra Strikers.
In Japan, the game was followed with The King of Fighters 2000.
