Golden Axe (ゴールデンアックス) is a beat-'em-up developed by Sega in 1989 for the Sega System 16 arcade board. The development team was headded by Makoto Uchida, who created Altered Beast.

Golden Axe was subsequently ported to a wide variety of home consoles, such as the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Master System. It was later rereleased as part of 6-Pak and remade for the Sega Smash Pack compilation for the Game Boy Advance and Sega PC Smash Pack for PC.

Story

Death Adder has kidnapped the royal family, and it is up to a band of three heroes to stop him, get revenge for past crimes he committed to them, and save the land.

Gameplay

You play as one of three soldiers: Ax Battler the Barbarian, who (despite his name) uses a sword and carries earth magic and is fighting to avenge the murder of his mother, Tyris Flare the Amazon, who uses a sword and carries fire magic and is fighting to avenge the murder of both her parents, and Gilius Thunderhead the Dwarf, who uses an axe and carries thunder magic and is fighting to avenge the murder of his brother.

All three use their magic with A, use their weapon with B, and jumps with C (pressing B in midair does a midair attack). Each player carries a limited supply of magic (indicated by a meter at the top of the screen) and will use it all at once when A is pressed. More magic can be collected by attacking the short Thieves clothed in blue who appear at certain points throughout the levels and after each level in a separate screen. Green Thieves carry life energy.

Ports

Console ports added an extra level and a "Duel" mode, which allows players to battle each other in a field.
