The Smurfs Travel the World (Les Schtroumpfs Autour du Monde) or The Smurfs 2 (Les Schtroumpfs 2) is the sequel to The Smurfs. It was released for the Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, and Sega Game Gear exclusively in Europe in 1996, although copies of the Master System version were found released several years later, making it the last Sega Master System title to be released in Europe.

    Story

Inquisitive Smurf and Smurfette sneak into Papa Smurf's laboratory one night to see the Magic Crystal that makes it possible for the smurfs to travel to anywhere in the world. The crystal shatters when they touch it, sending them across the world and away from their village. The two smurfs must retrieve all of the crystal fragments in order to return home.

    Gameplay

    Mega Drive version

The game is a platformer played as Inquisitive Smurf or Smurfette, who play identically, in various locations around the world. The game has a greater emphasis on exploration than its predecessor; the smurfs must collect the ten crystals scattered throughout the stage, and stages have no time limit. Crystals are sometimes visible in plain sight, but sometimes they are hidden behind terrain or inside enemies. Smurfs walk with Left and Right and run by holding A. They duck with Down and jump with B. They jump higher when running. They kick with C, which can be used to attack enemies or to interact with some stage objects. The smurfs can also defeat enemies by jumping on top of them. In underwater stages, the smurfs swim with BBBBB.

Smurfs start each life with four health points (shown as hearts) and lose one after taking damage from an enemy. A smurf loses a life after losing all four health points and taking an additional hit or after falling into a bottomless pit or deep water. The game ends after losing every life. The player is given a password after completing each world. There are three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, and Hard).

    Bonus stage

After collecting three keys in a single world, the smurf is whisked away to a bonus stage. The player can collect as many items as possible before time runs out. A counter tracks how many items have been collected. When time runs out, the items are tallied into hearts; whenever four hearts are counted, an extra life is earned.

In the Asia bonus stage, the lower rows of items only appear after kicking a ball into a gong and the higher rows of items appear after kicking all of the balls into the gongs.

    History

The Master System version of The Smurfs Travel the World was the last officially-licensed release for the system in Europe. It is consequently one of the single-rarest titles for Sega's 8-bit hardware, so rare that the community doubted its existence for some time.
