Yakuza: Like a Dragon, known as Ryu ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue (龍が如く7 光と闇の行方) is the seventh main Yakuza game, and was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2020. Later iterations of the game are known as Ryu ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue International (龍が如く7 光と闇の行方 インターナショナル) in Japan.

It breaks the tradition of its predecessors, not just by featuring a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, but by moving from real-time to turn-based fighting.

Gameplay

While much of the story structure of Yakuza: Like a Dragon shares similarities with previous Yakuza games, the combat section of play is replaced with a turn-based fighting system like traditional RPGs. Kasuga and up to three other party members take turns battling one or more enemies, with the objective to beat foes to earn money and experience.

Kasuga is the only constant across the game, always being controllable by the player and always taking part in fights. While others are expendable, if Kasuga gets knocked out during a fight, the game will end, at which point the user will be stripped of either half their earnings to try again, or sent back to the title screen to load the last save.

All party members have individual health (HP) and magic (MP) meters, and can either attack enemies, guard, use an item, or perform "skills" (which use MP) to assist in battle. Kasuga has extra options, such as the ability to call "Poundmates".

Outside of combat, Kasuga can explore cities and interact with people and venues just like in prior games. Taking part in many of these can increase aspects of Kasuga's "personality", which can have benefits during combat and allow access to other areas of the game. While Like A Dragon features the fictional districts of Kamurocho and the return of Sotenbori (last seen in Yakuza 5), much of the story takes place in a new fictoinal district of Yokohama, Isezaki Ijincho, modeled after the real district of Isezakichō.

Characters

Party members

Kasuga Ichiban
The star of Yakuza: Like a Dragon who is controlled by the player and is always the leader of the active party.
Adachi Koichi
Nanba
Mukouda Saeko
Han Joon-gi
Zhao Tianyou
Kamataki Eri
Eri, who Kasuga works with in the Ichiban Confections minigame, is an optional party member. After the company reaches rank 100, she will appear at Survive, and when talking to her, she will join up. As she is not required to beat the game, she does not appear in any of the story cutscenes and rarely interacts with the rest of the cast.

Eri also differs from the rest of the party in that her bond with Kasuga only increases when playing through Ichiban Confections.

Jobs

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Jobs.

All party members are assigned a default "job", but this can be changed by visiting Hello Work. Jobs are effectively different fighting styles (although some have other benefits outside of combat), some of which are only unlocked after certain conditions are met. Not all jobs are available to all party members, and some are unique to specific characters (for example, only Kasuga can be a "hero").

Gear

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Gear.

Similar to other RPGs, party members can be equipped with "gear" that can upgrade their base stats or have special effects in battle. This includes gear for a party member's weapon, head, body and legs and two accessories.

Items

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Items.

Like other Yakuza games there are a wide range of items which are either collected, bought or dropped by enemies.

Pound mates

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Poundmates.

At certain points in the game Kasuga and the party encounter special individuals who can later be called on in battle as "Poundmates". The first call is always free, but later calls require money. Some Poundmates are only available at certain times of day.

Sujidex

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Sujidex.

A clear parody of the Pokémon franchise, Kasuga is tasked with keeping a log of any enemies that are encountered during his adventure, with the goal of "dispatching them all!".

Part-Time Hero

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Part-Time Hero.

In Like A Dragon, record keeping and many of the side quests are rolled into an organisation called "Part-Time Hero", which Kasuga ends up working for. Part-Time Hero "missions" involve collecting certain items, and beating certain enemies, as well as errands for people around Ijincho.

Sub-stories

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Sub-stories.

As with previous games, there are a number of side missions (sub-stories) where Kasuga helps the people of Ijincho.

Minigames

Main article: Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Gameplay/Minigames.

Sticking with tradition, a number of minigames are also available for Kasuga to take part in, including sports and tabletop games, and arcade machines in Sega-branded game centers.

Unique to Like A Dragon is the Ichiban Confections company management game, and "Dragon Kart", a Mario Kart-inspired racing game that takes place across city streets. There is also a cinema showing old films, where the player is tasked with keeping Kasuga awake during performances.
