Persona 5 (ペルソナ5) is a RPG developed by P Studio and published by Atlus. It is the sixth main entry in the Persona series.

Story

Taking place in current day Tokyo, Persona 5 starts with a rather dark premise. Elections are coming up and random people around the city suddenly fall under coma or die outright. Many experts claim that this is a side effect of intense pressure the Japanese society puts on an average individual.

Main character is a high school student who is under probation after being sentenced for a crime he didn't commit. After meeting his legal guardian and attending his new school, he accidently travels into a dream-like world called "Meta-verse" in which creatures called "Shadows" ,who born from people's fears and frustrations, roam freely.

After being taken prisoner by Shadows, he is rescued by a talking cat named "Morgana" and learns that the area he is in right now is called "Palace", a type of metaphysical location of someone who is keeping his secrets subconsciously. He later learns how to use powers of his "Persona" a suppressed part of his personality which is capable of superhuman feats and can only be unleashed in the meta-verse.

Over the course of the game protagonist recruits more companions and forms "Phantom Thieves", a vigiliante group to stop powerful and corrupt people from hurting others by making villains to face their actions.

He eventually finds out that sudden deaths occuring all around the city are not random incidents but rather actions of a secret group within the Japanese government, who are manipulating the politics and population from behind the scenes.

Phantom Thieves eventually resolve to face this secret organization and make them pay for their crimes before country fall under rule of a corrupt, power-hungry politician.

Gameplay

Persona 5 is a turn-based JRPG. Game has a "social-calendar" system which first introduced in Persona 3, in which players are tasked with balancing their social lives and their struggle against Shadows.

In real world, players can wander around the Tokyo, purchase items and other equipment, improve relations with certain characters and take sub-quests to gain money and experience. Certain actions can also increase playable characters' stats.

Social Link system from Persona 3 also returns: Increasing level with certain character will give player passive bonuses such as new tactics to use in battle or other passive bonuses that will help player. Reaching maximum level with a social link unlock a very powerful skill or a powerful persona for main character or companions.

Main character also has social stats levels. By increasing this stats, player can unlock more social links, advance other links and gain other passive bonuses that will help them over the course of the game.

Exploring the meta-verse occurs in real time. Unlike previous games in the series, players can use stealth based gameplay to launch suprise attacks or avoid enemies althogether.

Combat occurs in turn-based fashion. Players take turn depending on their speed and can use melee, ranged attacks, use persona magic and skills or use items. Certain new actions and tactics can be unlocked by improving social links. Hitting weakpoints of enemies and protecting your characters' own weak points is an important part of the game. Hitting the weak point will result in a critical hit and gives the attacker an extra action.

Similar to the other games in the series, players can improve or create personas thanks to the series' staple; Blue Room.

History

Development

The game was first mentioned as being in development in the August 2011 issue of Famitsu, in which it was confirmed that Katsura Hashino would return as director, Shoji Meguro as composer and Shigenori Soejima as character designer. At that point the team had already outlined the game's theme, with them planning on challenging more new things than Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 did back when it was released. Unlike the team's previous game, Catherine, Persona 5 uses a new internal engine.

After a 72 hour long live stream counting down to the announcement, The game was officially announced for the PlayStation 3 with a teaser trailer on 24 November 2013. This was after a live stream that counted down to the announcement for 72 hours, with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona 4: Dancing All Night being announced during the stream. The teaser revealed that Atlus planned to release the game during the winter of 2014. On 25 February 2014 it was confirmed that the game would be released in the United States as well in 2015.

A second teaser trailer was released during Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference on 1 September 2014, revealing that the game was delayed to 2015 in Japan and that the game would be released on the PlayStation 4 as well. Then on 17 September 2015 the game was delayed once again to Summer 2016 in Japan, and in the United States to the same year. While there were no more delays in Japan, the game's western release did receive two more delays. One to 14 February 2017, and later to 4 April 2017.
