Story
A giant purple egg has been unearthed at a construction site. The Evil Space Aliens, Lord Zedd, Rita Repulsa, and their henchmen, arrive at the construction site and crack open the egg, releasing Ivan Ooze, a morphological being who ruled Earth 6,000 years ago before he was lured into a hyper-lock chamber and buried deep underground by Zordon and a group of young warriors. Ivan Ooze attacks the Command Center, incapacitating Zordon and robbing the Rangers of their powers. Zordon's assistant Alpha 5 sends the Rangers to the distant planet Phaedos to obtain the Great Power and save Zordon.
Gameplay
The game is a belt-scrolling beat-'em-up in the mold of Double Dragon or Final Fight that can be played by one player or by two players simultaneously. Half of the stages are based on the movie, but there are three flashbacks in the middle of the game that are based on episodes from the television series. Players can control the six Power Rangers: the White, Red, Black, Blue, Pink, and Yellow Rangers. Many stages end with a boss fight played in a Megazord, a massive robot built from the combination of 5 separate Zords piloted by the Rangers, against a giant opponent. In the stages based on the movie, players can choose the new Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers (Rocky, Adam, and Aisha), who play identically to their old counterparts. The Zords available for the end battles are the Ninja Megazord and White Ninja Falconzord. In the three stages based on episodes from the second season of the television series, players can control the original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers (Jason, Zack, and Trini). The Zords available for the end battle are the Thunder Megazord and the White Tigerzord in Warrior Mode. Players can choose which character to play before every stage. The game only features two types of standard enemies: the Ooze Men in stages based on the movie and the Putty Patrol in stages based on the television series.
The Rangers move in any direction using the D-Pad. Double-tapping in any direction makes the character run. Characters jump with . They attack with , which chains into a combo when pressed repeatedly. Each character has a unique weapon attack performed by holding and then releasing once the character starts to flash. The character cannot move or attack while charging this attack. Enemies and objects such as barrels can be picked up with in close range and thrown with again. Characters also have an all-around attack performed with , which attacks all enemies surrounding them but consumes a portion of vitality if it connects. In the Zord fights, the Zords cannot jump but can guard with . Dashing performs a unique move specific to each Zord.
Rangers and Zords have multiple vitality bars. Characters lose health when they are damaged by enemies or stage hazards such as meteorites. In addition, stage segments are timed, and the characters continuously lose health when time runs out. The bars are initially blue but change to yellow when depleted. The yellow bar changes to red, and the red bar to black when drained. The game ends for the player if the red bar is drained to black, but it can be continued as long as the players have credits remaining. In two-player games, credits are shared.

Power Coins are occasionally dropped by defeated foes. They grant bonus effects if attacked.

Stages
The first two stages and the final stage cover the events of the movie. The three stages in between are flashbacks based on episodes from the second season of the television series.
Stage 1 | |
---|---|
Ivan Ooze has emerged from his exile and sent his Ooze Men to terrorize Angel Grove. The Power Rangers must stop them. | |
Stage 2 | |
Ivan Ooze attacks the Command Center, damaging Zordon and Alpha 5 and stripping the Rangers of their powers. Alpha 5 sends the Rangers to the planet Phaedos, where they regain their powers. They return to Angel Grove to find Ivan's Ecto-Morphicons destroying the city. | |
Stage 3 | |
This stage is a flashback to the episode "White Light," where Tommy becomes the White Ranger. The team heads to Angel Grove Park to fight Lord Zedd's three Scarlet Sentinels: the Sentinel Neck, Sentinel Ear, and Sentinel Ring (Nimrod, AC, and DC respectively in the original television program). | |
Stage 4 | |
This stage is based on the episode "The Ninja Encounter." Three students from Stone Canyon High School (Rocky, Adam, and Aisha) are kidnapped by Goldar, along with their teacher. The Rangers must enter the cave, and rescue the four civilians before the three teens .
Some of the tall rocks in the background of the stage can be attacked, opening up passages to different parts of the stage. This is necessary to proceed, otherwise the players encounters dead ends and endless Putty Patrols. | |
Stage 5 | |
This stage is based on the episode "The Power Transfer." Jason, Zack, and Trini are relieved of their Power Ranger duties, and the Rocky, Adam, and Aisha are chosen to take their place. To transfer their powers, the Rangers must travel to the Forbidden Planet and obtain the Sword of Legend. | |
Stage 6 | |
The final stage returns to the events of the movie. The Rangers must defeat Ivan Ooze, who has combined with the Hornitron to form the Ivan Ecto-Morphicon. This stage consists solely of two Megazord fights. |
