Battle Arena Toshinden URA, called Toshinden URA (闘神伝URA) in Japan, is an entry in Takara's Battle Arena Toshinden series of fighting games, released in 1996 for the Sega Saturn.

It is a spin-off title based on the PlayStation game Battle Arena Toshinden 2, but it differs in story, characters, and gameplay. It serves as a sequel to Battle Arena Toshinden Remix. It is the second and final Battle Arena Toshinden game to appear on a Sega system.

Story

Sometime after the end of the first Toshinden Tournament, martial arts experts across the world begin vanishing. Police are mystified by the disappearances, which, unbeknowst to them, are the work of an android fighter called the Replicant. A scientist named Ronron started the Toshinhei Replicant project in order to create a peace enforcement robot, which was modeled after the world's greatest fighter, Sho Shinjo. However, the prototype was stolen before it could be completed, and the machine was turned rogue by an unknown actor.

At the same time, a mysterious traveler known as Ripper is searching for his sister. He believes that Sho is responsible for her disappearance and seeks him out.

Characters

Move lists assume the player is facing right. If facing left, and should be reversed. S refers to either slash button, while K refers to either kick button.

All of the characters return from Battle Arena Toshinden Remix except for Gaia and Cupido. Three new playable characters have been added (Tracy, Ripper, and Ronron) as well as one new hidden character (Vermilion) and two new bosses (Replicant and Wolf).

	Eiji Shinjo
	Height: 5'9" Weight: 138 lbs. Age: 22 Blood type: A Origin: Japan
	A young Japanese swordsman who fights with a sword called the "White Tiger." After finding his lost brother Sho in the last tournament, he now seeks to defeat Ripper, who wounded him in battle the last time they met. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Rekkuuzan (Special 1) S Eiji swings his sword, creating a burst of fire that travels across the battlefield. Hishouzan (Special 2) S Eiji spirals up into the air while holding his sword out, which knocks his opponent over on impact. When performed with  LS , he spirals up immediately; when performed with  HS , he rushes forward a distance before spiraling up. Mukurowari (Special 3) S Eiji somersaults forward and slices his sword downward. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Ryuuseikyaku (Special 4 in the air) K in midair Eiji dives diagonally downward with a flaming kick. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Syugekidan +K Eiji slides along the ground, which sweeps his opponent. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Jigokumon + Eiji rushes forward, knocking his opponent into the air and then slashing the opponent with his sword repeatedly in midair. Desperation: Byakki Mousyuken  HS  Eiji rushes forward and performs a series of slashes and kicks, finishing by spiraling up into the air while holding his sword out.
	Kayin Amoh
	Height: 5'10" Weight: 140 lbs. Age: 23 Blood type: AB Origin: Britain
	A Scottish swordsman and a friendly rival to Eiji. He is a bounty hunter who is searching for Ripper after hearing he bested Eiji in battle. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Sonic Slash (Special 1) S Kayin swings his sword, creating a burst of fire that travels across the battlefield. Deadly Raise (Special 2) S Kayin spirals up into the air at a slight diagonal angle while holding his sword out, which knocks his opponent over on impact. When performed with  LS , he spirals up immediately; when performed with  HS , he rushes forward a distance before spiraling up. Leg Crush (Special 3 on the ground) K Kayin rolls his leg forward in a split kick. Scottish Moon (Special 3 in the air) K in midair Kayin does a backflip kick in midair. Vertical Slash + HS  Kayin slashes his sword upward, which can hit up to two times. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Hell's Gate + Kayin juggles his opponent into the air with a rolling kick, then continues to kick the opponent in midair. Desperation: Hell's Inferno  HS  Kayin rushes forward and performs a series of slashes and kicks, finishing with a split kick and then spiraling up into the air at a slight diagonal angle while holding his sword out.
	Sofia

	A whip-wielding Russian woman who has been employed by Ronron to help subdue the Replicant. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Thunder Ring (Special 1) S Sofia swings her whip, creating a ring-shaped projectile. The projectile travels forwards with  LS  and diagonally upwards with  HS . Aurora Revolution (Special 2) S Sofia spins forward on one leg. She spins while attacking with her whip with  LS  or while kicking outward with  HS . Jewelry Shower (Special 3) K Sofia rolls through the air with a semicircular kick. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Rattlesnake (Special 4) S Sofia lashes her whip repeatedly in front of her. 	Rungo Iron

	An American miner who fights with a large club. He was analyzed as part of the Toshinhei Replicant project and is angered that his data is being used for evil purposes. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Fire Wave (Special 1) S Rungo bashes his club against the ground, creating a wave of fire that shoots across the ground. The fire wave is longer and travels much faster with  LS . Power Thrust (Special 2) K Rungo jumps high into the air, which damages and knocks over opponents that he hits in his ascent. When performed with  HS , he dives back down to the ground with his club, which is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Spinning Charge (Special 3) S Rungo spins forward on one leg while swinging his club around. He swings the club upward with  LS  and outward with  HS . Batter Up S Rungo charges forward, then swings his club upward, knocking over his opponent on impact. Brutal Stomper (Special 4) S Rungo walks forward, stomping with alternating legs on each step. Step and Swing , then + HS  Rungo steps forward and smashes downward with his club. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Hyper Batter Up + Rungo charges forward, then swings his club while jumping high into the air. Desperation: Mega Fire Storm  HS  Rungo bashes his club against the ground, creating a wave of fire that explodes into the air in six pillars.
	Fo Fai

	An elderly Chinese mystic who is relishing the chaotic state of the world. He fights with claws on his hands. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Mystic Sphere (Special 1 on the ground) S Fo holds his claws apart and creates a large sphere of energy in front of him, When performed with  HS , he creeps forward slightly while holding the sphere. Sphere Burst (Special 1 in the air) S in midair Fo holds his claws apart and creates a large sphere of energy in below him. Travel Sphere (Special 2) S Fo holds his claws apart and creates a large sphere of energy in below him, which he rolls forward a short distance. Upward Sphere (Special 3) S Fo lies on his back and creates a large sphere of energy above him. Pagoda Kick (Special 4) K Fo flies diagonally upward with a kick. Claw Attack , then + HS  Fo lunges forward while swiping his claws. Claw Slide + HS  Fo slides across the ground with his claws out, which sweeps his opponent. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Sphere Throw + Fo winds up his arm, then creates a large sphere of energy up in front of him. Desperation: Mystic Sphere Burst  HS  Fo throws four large energy spheres across the battlefield, pivoting around the opponent with each one, then jumps into the air and creates one last energy sphere below him before landing.
	Mondo

	A Japanese ninja who has been sent by his clan to obtain the plans for the Toshinhei Replicant. He fights with a spear. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Shippu Tsuki (high) (Special 1) S Mondo plunges his spear forward, at standing height, which extends in length. This move can only be blocked standing. Shippu Tsuki (low) S Mondo plunges his spear forward, near the ground, which extends in length. This move can only be blocked crouched. Gouriki Raijin (Special 1 in the air) S in midair Mondo shoots a stream of fire diagonally downwards from his spear. Gouriki Tenbu (Special 2) S Mondo rises into the air at while spinning his spear over his head. He rises directly upward with  LS  and at a slight diagonal angle and higher with  HS . Gouriki Fuujin (Special 3) S Mondo slides forward while spinning his spear in front of him. Shippu Tentsuki (Special 4) S Mondo thrusts his spear diagonally upwards. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Choriki Mondohou + Mondo leans forward and fires a volley of fireballs into the air. Desperation: Choriki Daibutsumetsu  HS  Mondo rises into the air while spinning his spear over his head, then sprays multiple streams of fire from his spear in a fan pattern.
	Duke Rambert

	A French knight who joins the battle after hearing that his rival Eiji was defeated by the Ripper. He fights with a sword. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Southern Cross (Special 1) S Duke charges forward. When performed with  HS , he does a lateral sword slice, then somersaults with a downward sword strike, which is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Cyclone (Special 2) S Duke spins in place while holding his sword down, then cuts his sword down from above. Head Crush (Special 1 in the air) S in midair Duke stabs his sword downward while falling. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. Double Lunge S Duke lunges forward and stabs his sword twice. When performed with  HS , he finishes by slashing his sword from side to side. Charge and Strike (Special 4) K Duke charges to the other side of his opponent with a sword strike. When performed with  HS , he returns with another sword strike. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Grand Cross + Duke hovers in the air, then slams the ground with his sword upon landing, which creates an explosion. Desperation: La Fin  HS  Duke spins in place while holding his sword down, then cuts his sword down from above.
	Ellis

	An orphan dancer who learned in the previous tournament that her father is the shadowy underworld leader Gaia. She fights with a pair of dirks. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Twinkle Twirl (Special 1 on the ground) S Ellis twirls around while holding her dirks out. When performed with  HS , she hovers in the air. Arc Slash (Special 1 in the air) S in midair Ellis dives diagonally downward while holding her dirks out. This move is an overhead attack that can hit opponents who are blocking while crouched. When performed with  LS , she knocks her opponent over on impact. Flaming Crescent (Special 2) S Ellis rises into the air while holding her dirks out. When performed with  LS , she rises into the air immediately; when performed with  HS , she slides forward a distance before rising into the air. Tornado (Special 3 on the ground) K Ellis curls into a ball and rolls through the air in a high arc. Air Dance (Special 3 in the air) K in midair Ellis does a backflip kick in midair. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Angel Kiss + Ellis dashes forward, then stabs her opponent repeatedly with her dirks. Desperation: French Kiss  HS  Ellis curls into a ball and rolls through the air in a high arc. If she hits her opponent while rolling, she performs a series of strikes with her dirks upon landing.
	Tracy
	Height: 5'5" Weight: 115 lbs. Age: 21 Blood type: B Origin: USA
	An American policewoman who fights with a pair of tonfas. She was suspended for her excessive use of force but believes that she will be reinstated if she can unravel the Replicant mystery. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Cardiac Arrest (Special 1) S Tracy steps forward and jabs with one of her tonfas. When performed with  HS , the tonfa shoots a short-ranged burst of flame. Flip Kick (Special 2) K Tracy does a backflip kick. Chopper Strike (Special 3) S Tracy rises into the air while holding her tonfas out. When performed with  LS , she dashes forward a short distance first; when performed with  HS , she walks forward with a spin while attacking with a tonfa first. Ground Tazer S Tracy hits the ground with her tazer, which causes an electric wave to travel across the battlefield, which explodes after a certain distance. The explosion does damage and knocks over opponents, but the wave does nothing. Jackpot K Tracy rolls into a ball on the ground, then plunges forward feet first. She travels in a low arc with  LS  and diagonally up into the air with  HS . This move can also be performed in midair. Head Stomp S Tracy flips forward through the air in a high arc. Pressing or attacks on the way down. Move list (Desperation moves) Name Command Description Overdrive: Double Flip Kick + Tracy does two successive backflip kicks. Desperation: Badge Barrage  HS  Tracy dashes forward and performs a barrage of punches and kicks, ending with a backflip kick.
	Ripper

	A mysterious figure who is looking for his sister (believed to be Cupido), who has disappeared. He believes Sho is responsible and wounds Sho's brother Eiji in combat in order to lure him out. He fights with a pair of katars. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Sidewinder (Special 1) S Ripper runs past his opponent while holding his katars out. When performed with  HS , he runs back the other way as well (forcing his opponent to defend in the opposite direction). Jamming Out (Special 2) S Ripper lunges forward and stabs with his katars. When performed with  HS , he backflips after performing the move. This move does a high amount of damage when blocked while crouching if performed with  HS . Break Out (Special 3) K Ripper slides forward with a front kick that knocks his opponent over on impact. Lightning Stinger I (Special 4) S Ripper swings one of his katars upward. Lightning Stinger II S Ripper spins forward while holding his katars out. Lightning Stinger III S Ripper spins around, then plunges a katar forward. 	A Chinese scientist and the leader of the Toshinhei Project, which intended to create a robotic warrior to fight terrorism and enforce a peaceful world order. However, the Replicant was stolen before it could be finished and used for evil purposes, and Ronron intends to discover the perpetrator and stop the Replicant. Move list (Special moves) Name Command Description Bomber Ball (Special 1) S Ronron throws a giant bomb across the battlefield. Bomber Bowling (Special 2) K Ronron rolls a giant bomb across the ground. Zapper Stick (Special 3) S Ronron shoots her zapper stick diagonally into the air. Bosses

The bosses are playable with cheat codes.

	Replicant
	A robotic copy of Sho Shinjo that was created by Ronron as a peace enforcement android but turned rogue. It appears as the subboss of the game.
	Wolf
	Ronron's superior, who supervised the Toshinhei project. He wants to rule the world and stole the Replicant prototype in order to use it to dispose of talented martial artists who might stand in his way.

Legacy

While this would be the last Toshinden game for a Sega console, the PlayStation would receive two more sequels, Battle Arena Toshinden 3 and Toshinden 4, and a spin-off with super-deformed characters (similar to Virtua Fighter Kids) called Battle Arena Nitoushinden.

Versions

The Saturn version has a different story from the original Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for the PlayStation. Four characters were removed from the PlayStation game (Gaia, Chaos, Uranus, and Master), and four exclusive characters are added in their place (Ripper, Ronron, Replicant, and Wolf). Gameplay was altered, making the game feel somewhat different. There are also new arenas, a new story, and a different CG intro.
