Galaxy Fight, or Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors (ギャラクシーファイト ユニバーサル・ウォリアーズ) in Japan, is a fighting game by Sunsoft. Originally developed for the Neo Geo arcade hardware, it was ported to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation in 1995. The Saturn version is the only port of Galaxy Fight to be released in all three main regions of the world (Japan, North America, and Europe).

Like many fighting games originally designed for the Neo Geo system, it makes heavy use of sprite scaling. It received a spiritual successor in Waku Waku 7, which was also released for Saturn.

Story

Once in a thousand years, the ancient texts say, a god takes physical form and appears in the galaxy. According to the time keepers of the planet Denis in the Milky Way system, the 1000th year has arrived. The god that the galaxy has been waiting to greet has arrived. But he is not a being of light. He is the god of Evil and controls the powers of darkness.

He calls himself "Felden Cryce." He is endless, all encompassing, all powerful, and with his power, he desires to rule the Galaxy. No one stands before the dark power of this super being. The races of the galaxy can only suffer in silence and wait for a savior to come...

Gameplay

Gameplay

Galaxy Fight is a 2D fighting game. Players can choose from eight characters and travel through the in-game solar system to defeat opponents inhabiting each of the planets. Matches are fought to the best of three rounds, and each round is timed. Stages scroll infinitely on both sides, so it is impossible to corner opponents.

Characters move with Left and Right. They crouch with Down and jump with Up-left, Up, or Up-right. Characters can attack with A (light), B (medium), or C (hard). Light attacks are fast but do little damage, while hard attacks are strong but slow. There are no separate buttons for punches and kicks, as in most fighting games. Instead, the attack that comes out depends on the character, the strength of the button used, the proximity of the character to the opponent, and whether the character is standing, crouching, jumping, or dashing. Every character also has special moves that are performed with different button combinations. Projectile attacks can be dissipated by attacking them. Characters can perform a taunt with Z.

Characters backstep or dash with Left Left or Right Right (which can be mapped to L and R in the options). Dashes continue until interrupted by an attack (which can be a normal move or a special move) or being hit. It is possible to move to the other side of the opponent while dashing. Attacks do more damage if landed from a dash. Some dashing attacks send the opponent flying backward; the character automatically pursues the opponent when this happens.

Characters can block by holding the D-Pad away while the opponent is attacking. Blocked normal moves do no damage, but blocked special moves still do a small amount of damage. Characters can block while crouching or standing. Jumping attacks can only be blocked standing, and low or sweep attacks can only be blocked crouching. Characters can throw each other Left or Right when next to an opponent and pressing the medium or hard attack button. Throws cannot be blocked.

Modes

In the single-player game, the player chooses from eight characters and fights a match against every other character in the game in a random order. Each battle is preceded and followed by short dialogue specific to the characters fighting. After four wins, there is a mid-game battle against the unplayable character Bonus-kun. After every playable character has been defeated (except for the selected character), the player faces the first boss, Yacopu, who can take the form of the player's character after losing a round. Then the player fights the final boss, Felden. After the ending, if the player successfully won every battle in only two rounds, there is an additional battle against the hidden boss, Rouwe.

The game ends if the player loses a match but can be continued an unlimited number of times. There are five difficulty levels for computer-controlled opponents (Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard). A second player can enter the game for a two-player versus match by pressing  START  during gameplay.

There is also a dedicated two-player versus mode where both players can choose any characters. The boss characters are playable in this mode using a cheat code.

Note: Move lists assume that the character is facing right. When facing left, Left and Right should be reversed.

Versions

Following its Neo Geo MVS and AES release, Galaxy Fight was brought to three CD-ROM-based platforms with arranged music: the Neo Geo CD, the PlayStation, and this Sega Saturn version.

The Saturn version of the game is a relatively faithful conversion of the original game but omits some frames of animation. It generally compares favourably to its PlayStation counterpart however; a lower quality port with noticeably distorted graphics in most scenes and which occasionally exhibits slowdown during gameplay.

Loading times are similar but manifest at different points of the game; the PlayStation version takes longer to load between matches, but gets to the character selection screen slightly faster than the Saturn. Both are nevertheless significantly faster than the Neo Geo CD, a console which is notorious for its slow disc access speeds. As is to be expected, in its original cartridge form Galaxy Fight had no loading screens (or menu systems, which also differ slightly between the home versions).
