Yakuza 4, called Ryu ga Gotoku 4: Densetsu o Tsugumono (龍が如く4 伝説を継ぐもの) in Japan, is an action game developed by Sega CS1 and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3. It is the sequel to Yakuza 3, also released on the PlayStation 3 the year before.
Unlike previous games which had only one protagonist, Yakuza 4 has four main characters. Each character's story arc is divided into four parts and eventually combines for the final fifth chapter. Each character has his own fighting style, story and substories.
Yakuza 4 was a big hit in Japan and also received well in overseas when released in English in 2011. Unlike Yakuza 3, no content was cut from overseas versions this time.

Story
Story takes place in Kamurocho in 2010 and revolves around a mysterious woman named Lily. A power struggle in the streets of Kamurocho is taking place and old grudges from decades ago starting to surface. Each four character, one way or another, gets involved with the plot that can change the Kamurocho forever.
Characters (In order of chapters)
Shun Akiyama A money lender working in Kamurocho with his secretary Hana. Formerly a homeless due to an unfortunate incident, Akiyama lends money to people in need without any interest, if they can pass the unusual tests he gives to them. His life changes when Lily, a mysterious woman who shows up in his office and asks for a large sum of money. He inadverantly gets involved with a shootout in front of his office and gets tangled with the war in the streets of Kamurocho.
Akiyama's fighting style somehow remind taek won do or kickboxing as he uses his kicks to defeat enemies. He is the also fastest character in the game.
Taiga Saejima Formerly a Yakuza in the Tojo Clan's Sasai family, Saejima was arrested in 1985 after the infamous "Ueno-Seima Hit" which killed 18 people. He was tried for murder and sentenced to death. He has been waiting in the death row for 25 years until one day he was inexplicably transfered to Okinawa Special Prison No.1 for unkown reasons. While recovering from a beatdown from prison guards, Saejima is approached by Goh Hamazaki, another inmate (and the same person who stabbed Kiryu at the end of the Yakuza 3) and learns that Sasai family was disbanded after the hit. Furious that his whole life was ruined for nothing, Saejima agrees to work with Hamazaki to escape and return to Kamurocho in order to find the truth. Saejima carries a Tiger tattoo on his back, a pun to his name (Taiga sounds like "Tiger" in Japanese).
Saejima's fighting style focuses on raw power. He is slower than other characters but he is most resilent and his moves hit harder than all characters.
Masayoshi Tanimura A police detective in Kamoro-cho Police Department's public safety division, Tanimura is known as "Parasite of Kamurocho" for his love for gambling and taking bribes from establishments that allow illegal immigrants work in. He is however, actually a good cop who will never turn a blind eye to any injustice, especially if it involves an owner abusing his foreign workers. Money he gets from bribes usually goes to "Little-Asia" a small section in Kamurocho which houses illegal immigrants and their families. He is proficient in many different Asian languages. He gets involved in the story when he gets a clue that might bring light to the possible corruption in the police force and murder of his father, who was also a detective and was killed 20 years ago.
Tanimura's fighting style involves mostly grappling and parrying moves. He has many additional attacks with can be used with QTEs.
Kazuma Kiryu Main character of previous Yakuza games, Kiryu's quiet live is again disturbed when Saejima, who escaped from prison washed up in the beach in front of the orphanage. Kiryu at first refuses to help Saejima and advises him to turn himself in but Saejima refuses and after a brief fight, he finally agrees to help him to go to Kamurocho. A few days later, Hamazaki, who also survived from prison shows up at his door and gives him a file that can change lives of many people in Tojo Clan. Resolved to solve the mystery that started 5 years ago, Kiryu sets off to Kamurocho one more time.
