Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (ピットフォール) is a platform game developed and published by Activision in 1994. It is part of the Pitfall series. It is notable for being one of the few games to be released on the Mega Drive as well as both of its add-ons, the Mega-CD and 32X.

Story
Pitfall Harry has settled down following his days as an adventurer to raise his son, Harry Jr. Inheriting his father's love for exploration, Harry Jr. grew up to become an adventurer, causing Pitfall Harry to pine for his old adventure days. Both Harry and Harry Jr. embark on a journey to the jungles of Central America to find lost Mayan treasures. After several days, both Harry and Harry Jr. reach the center of the Mayan empire, hoping to uncover the treasure of Uaxactun. However, as soon as Harry Jr. uncovers the relic, his father is captured by an evil Mayan warrior spirit named Zakelua. Now Harry Jr. must rescue his father from captivity.
Gameplay
The game is a side-scrolling action platformer. The player takes control of Pitfall Harry Junior across multiple stages set in the Mayan jungles of Central America. Most of the stages featured in the game, though linear in nature, are large and populated with multiple obstacles, enemies and environmental hazards, requiring the player to traverse them by running, jumping, climbing, swinging, and shooting or dodging enemies. Other areas are more maze-like and exploratory, making the player take different routes to reach the end. Harry Jr. is moved with and and jumps with . Harry Jr. can lie on the ground by pressing +, allowing him to crawl through narrow spaces. Harry Jr. climbs vines with and . He automatically grabs swinging vines when he jumps on the ends of them and automatically grabs ziplines when he jumps over them. He flips switches and enters doorways with .
Harry Jr. can attack enemies using a whip with . The whip is also used for other actions such as pushing buttons or breaking open bags containing items. He also has three special weapons used with : sling stones, boomerangs and explosives. The player switches the special weapon by tapping START (holding START pauses the game). Special weapons have their own dedicated buttons when using a Six Button Control Pad.
The player's health is indicated in the top-right corner by a graphic of Harry Jr. being chased by a crocodile. If Harry Jr. is killed, he respawns on the nearest checkpoint reached. Once all lives are lost, the game is over, though players have the option of resuming progress using continues. Continues can be gained by collecting pieces of treasure. Stages also contain extra lives, health items, and weapon ammunition. Throughout the game are also hidden letters that spell the word "Pitfall," as well as other secrets including the original Atari 2600 version of Pitfall!
Weapons
In addition to his whip, Harry Jr. has special projectile weapons with limited ammunition.

The player is awarded with an extra continue for every 50 pieces of treasure collected.

History
Development
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was one of three Super NES games announced by Activision during 1993 based on its older Atari 2600 back catalogue. All were stopped mid-production presumably due to quality concerns. The others; River Raid: The Mission of No Return (based on the 1982 game River Raid) and Kaboom!: Return of the Mad Bomber (based on the 1981 game, Kaboom!) were not released, while Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was delayed by a year and given a complete graphical makeover. The lead platform also transitioned from the Super NES to the Sega Mega Drive.
Animation for Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was created by Kroyer Films (of FernGully: The Last Rainforest fame). Outlines of characters were drawn by hand on paper, and then sent to Activision for scanning, colouring and editing. Bill Kroyer claims to have no knowledge about Disney's Aladdin, which pioneered these techniques during 1993.
Legacy
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was also released for the Atari Jaguar, Super NES, and Windows PC, and later for the Game Boy Advance. The Mega Drive version has since been released on the Wii's Virtual Console service.
Versions
While the 32X version of the game has a larger colour palette, it is let down by slower framerates for the foregrounds and sprites, due in part to the system's inability to draw its high-colour graphics as fast as its 64-colour Mega Drive counterpart (which is still responsible in this case for the backgrounds, which update at the full 60 FPS).
The Mega-CD version, as well as including a CD audio soundtrack, contains full motion video sequences and extra stages. Compared to the 32X version, it runs stable. The Super NES version has a brighter, more balanced color palette, but it has technical issues such as slowdown and missing animations. The "definitive" version is a tie between the Mega-CD, Jaguar, and PC versions.
